Are simple things really simple?
Have you ever noticed that sometimes even the simplest things in life are surprisingly difficult to do? From struggling with straightforward tasks to feeling overwhelmed during mundane activities, it is clear that simplicity is not always as straightforward as it seems.?
Why is that? What is it that we are missing here??
There could be multiple explanations for this.?
One could be the expectation of simplicity that has become a part of this generation. We are used to getting instant answers (internet search engines), instant foods that cook in 2 minutes, and instant validation (social media). We want straightforward solutions that are delivered to us. But life is not that simple. It could be why mundane tasks like cooking a basic meal or organizing our workspace can overwhelm us unexpectedly. It leaves us questioning our abilities.?
Another reason could be the difference in perspective and experience. What’s simple for one need not be simple for another. Our brains are not wired the same way and we all come with different strengths. Take people with ADHD for example. They might struggle to sit in one place and pay attention to whatever is happening at a meeting for 30 minutes even if they are very good at their job. To everyone else, it could be a very simple thing, but it’s not the case for them!?
Also, our emotional responses are rarely a direct result of the task or situation at hand. Rather it's influenced by our thoughts, memories, associations, or even how our day has been so far. On a terrible day, even a simple question like “How was your day?” can set off an avalanche of thoughts and emotions.?
So, do not beat yourself up if something that is supposed to be simple feels complicated for you. What’s simple is subjective.?
That said, here are two things that you can do to help navigate through complications and take care of your mental health:?
