Understanding the changing needs of manufacturers who are starting to ship smaller consignments direct to the user.

The recent pandemic and the challenges in supply chain has meant that lots of companies are having transition to serving the end user to ship smaller quantities direct to the user. These are some of the remarks we've had from our clients:

Instead of shipping pallets or cages to distributors, we’re shipping parcels and cartons direct to the user!

We normally ship packs of 24 but we now need to send them as singles

We used to ship via pallet network or full truckload but we’re now packing individually and shipping by parcel courier

At Maxpack we understand what changes you will need to make to your packaging and processes to facilitate this change.

The 6 key areas of focus are:

  • Process. Packing parts and products individually requires a new process and you need to ensure that the packaging and the packing methods don't become a bottle neck to your operation.
  • Protection. The change of packing and distribution requires a greater level of protection as parcels are handled in a very different way to pallets in transit.
  • Cost. As you are adding in an extra process and individual packaging is required cost is a major consideration resulting from the change.
  • Stock & Storage. Stock of new packaging ties up cash and space so stock and supply options along with JIT to minimise this impact are key.
  • Customisation. Made to measure packaging improves the presentation of your product, improves the protection and cuts down on wasted packaging to fill voids.
  • Environment. End users will need to dispose of the packaging around your product so making sure that this is easy and friendly to the environment is possibly one of the most important aspects to consider

Hi Steve, nice article. I agree. We see a lot of this. There is a large “bespoke” element to logistics these days. People want to reduce packaging quantities, reduce stock, reduce plastic, have a better fitter product requiring less shipping of air. The “look” of packaging arrives has never been so important.

shame it took the pandemic for people to appreciate that using the correct size packaging is a benefit to supplier and end user
