That’s where the distinction between the brain and the mind becomes crucial. While they work in tandem, each plays a unique role in shaping how we perceive, react, and ultimately grow.?
In this article, we’ll dive into the world of the brain and the mind, exploring how they influence our ability to adopt a growth mindset, rewire old habits, and unlock our potential for continuous learning and improvement.
The Brain vs The Mind: What’s the Difference?
At first glance, the brain and the mind might seem interchangeable, but they serve different purposes.?
The brain is the physical organ, a complex web of neurons, synapses, and chemical signals. It is responsible for controlling our body’s basic functions, from breathing to heart rate, and processing external stimuli. It’s like the hardware of a computer, a vital part of our existence that keeps things running smoothly.
The mind, however, is more abstract. It represents our consciousness, thoughts, emotions, and beliefs. While the brain houses the mind, the mind is where our experiences, memories, and subjective interpretations take shape.?
The mind is the software that interacts with the brain’s hardware. This is where mindsets are formed, either growth or fixed.?
By understanding how these two work together, we gain insight into how we can harness their power to adopt a growth mindset.
For example, when you encounter a problem, the brain processes the information and sends signals, but the mind interprets the problem based on your beliefs and past experiences. If your mind believes you can learn and grow from it, you’ll push through the challenge. However, if your mind is fixed and has a negative set of beliefs, you’ll find yourself in a vicious cycle of problems.
This is the beauty of the interaction between the brain and the mind.
The Right and Left Hemispheres of the Brain
The brain is divided into two hemispheres, each playing a distinct role in how we process information. The left hemisphere is often referred to as the "logical brain." It excels at tasks related to logic, mathematics, and analytical thinking.?
It is the part of the brain we rely on when solving problems, handling facts and figures, or organizing information. In the workplace, for instance, it’s the left brain that kicks in when you’re creating strategies, solving problems, or managing tasks.
On the other hand, the right hemisphere is the "creative brain." It governs creativity, intuition, and imagination, helping us approach challenges from different perspectives. This is where innovation and new ideas are born.?
Artists, writers, and designers tap into this hemisphere to create their masterpieces. However, the right hemisphere is essential in all walks of life, not just the arts. It helps us think outside the box, make intuitive decisions, and see patterns where others might not.
Both hemispheres are vital to fostering a growth mindset. While logic helps us evaluate problems, creativity encourages us to think outside the box and find innovative solutions.?
A true growth mindset requires the balance of both — tapping into our logical thinking while embracing the creative, risk-taking side of ourselves. When you face a challenge at work or in life, having both the analytical and creative sides working together opens up a world of possibilities.
Neural Networks and Neuroplasticity
Neural networks are like the brain’s communication system. They are interconnected pathways that carry information from one area to another. Every time we learn something new, tackle a challenge, or adopt a new habit, these networks fire and strengthen.?
This process is known as neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to change and adapt over time, even into adulthood.

Neuroplasticity is where the magic of a growth mindset lies. It proves that we are not stuck with the abilities or limitations we are born with. By regularly challenging ourselves and persisting through difficulties, we are literally rewiring our brain to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
My Story: Aphantasia I personally know how powerful neuroplasticity can be. I live with a condition called aphantasia, which means I can’t visualize images in my mind.?
For many, creativity often comes from the ability to form mental pictures, but that’s not my reality. However, I’ve learned that a growth mindset doesn’t require visualization in the traditional sense.?
Instead, I’ve trained my brain to think creatively through other means, logical thinking, connecting ideas, and innovating in unique ways. This has been a testament to how neuroplasticity works. Over time, my brain has adapted, and I’ve been able to tap into creativity in ways I didn’t initially think possible.
Neuroplasticity doesn’t just apply to people with unique challenges like mine. It applies to everyone. With the right mindset, you can learn new skills, develop resilience, and build new neural pathways that help you grow.
Conscious and Subconscious Mind
The conscious mind is responsible for our intentional thoughts and actions, what we focus on at any given moment. When you’re actively learning something new, you’re using your conscious mind.?
For example, when learning a new skill at school, you're fully engaged, taking notes, and practicing intentionally. The conscious mind is where deliberate learning happens.
Howbeit, the subconscious mind, which operates below the surface, is where most of our automatic behaviors, beliefs, and emotions reside. It’s like a powerful hard drive storing our habits and learned experiences. This is where we store our deepest beliefs about ourselves, whether we believe we are capable of growth or stuck in a fixed state.
It is often referred to as the "God mind" because it never rests, constantly active, 24/7.?
It accepts whatever we feed it and acts on those beliefs. If we tell ourselves, "I'm not good enough," the subconscious says yes and confirms it by aligning our experiences accordingly. On the other hand, if we affirm positive thoughts, like "I'm capable," the subconscious will help shape our reality to match that belief. This is how the universe works through us, and why it's so important to feed our minds with empowering thoughts.
A fixed mindset often operates at the subconscious level, where negative beliefs about our abilities become ingrained. But by bringing these beliefs into our conscious awareness, we can challenge and reframe them.?
For example, recognizing that we’ve been avoiding certain tasks out of fear of failure allows us to consciously adopt a growth mindset and shift our approach: "I may struggle, but that’s part of the learning process."
To reshape our subconscious mind, we need consistent effort and self-awareness. Practices like mindfulness, reflection, and feedback loops help us bring subconscious beliefs to the surface and actively work on reshaping them.
How the Brain and Mind Shape a Growth Mindset
Ultimately, understanding the brain and mind empowers us to actively cultivate a growth mindset. Knowing how neuroplasticity works, we can deliberately choose challenges that push us out of our comfort zones.?
By balancing our logical and creative thinking, we approach problems with both rigor and innovation. And by becoming aware of our subconscious patterns, we can break free from limiting beliefs and replace them with empowering ones.
Our brain is designed for growth, both physically and mentally. The more we understand its capabilities, the better we can unlock its potential to help us grow, learn, and thrive.
We all have the tools within us to foster a growth mindset. The brain is incredibly adaptable, and the mind can be trained to think in new ways. Whether you’re tackling a professional challenge, developing a new skill, or overcoming personal obstacles, the key lies in understanding the powerful relationship between your brain and your mindset.
