Have you ever met someone whose presence lights up a room, not because of what they’re wearing or how they look, but because of who they are? You can’t quite put your finger on it, but there’s something magnetic about them. They exude confidence, warmth, and authenticity. That’s the magic of a personal brand that’s aligned from the inside out—a brand built on what I call BOW: Branding Our Within/Without.

Let me share a story.

Meet Tola

Tola was brilliant. She had the experience, the skills, and the qualifications to match as a Finance expert. But when it came to presenting herself, she often felt invisible. “Dami,” she told me one day, “I don’t think people really see me for who I am.”

I asked her a simple question: “Who are you, Tola?”

She paused. “I guess I’m… hardworking, kind, and passionate about helping others. But that’s just who I am on the inside. Does it even matter professionally?”

I smiled. “Tola, what if I told you that the most powerful brands are built on the inside first? Your values, your passion, your essence—that’s what makes you unique. If you can align those with how you show up outwardly, you’ll become unforgettable.”

That’s where we began Tola’s journey: from the within to the without.

Think of your inner values as the roots of a tree. They’re invisible but essential. They ground you and provide the nourishment you need to grow. Now imagine your outward image—the way you communicate, dress, and interact with others—as the branches and leaves. Without strong roots, the tree can’t thrive. And without healthy branches and leaves, the roots go unnoticed.

Your personal brand works the same way. When your inner values align with your outward image, you create a brand that is not only powerful but also sustainable.

How to Build Your BOW

Now, let’s make this practical. Here are three steps to help you align your inner values with your outward image:

1. Define Your Core Values

Take a moment to think about what truly matters to you. What drives you? What do you want to be known for?

Here’s a quick exercise: Write down three words that describe your inner values. For example:

  • Integrity
  • Empathy
  • Growth

For Tola, her words were kindness, excellence, and service.


2. Reflect Your Values Outwardly

Ask yourself: How can I show these values in my daily interactions and appearance?

For example:

  • If kindness is one of your values, does your communication reflect warmth and understanding?
  • If you value excellence, does your LinkedIn profile or résumé look polished and professional?
  • If growth matters to you, do your conversations show curiosity and a willingness to learn?

Tola began by making small but intentional changes. She updated her LinkedIn profile to highlight her passion for service, and she started posting stories about how she’d helped her team solve challenges.

3. Embrace Consistency

Consistency is key to making your personal brand stick. Once you’ve aligned your within and without, make sure the message is clear across all platforms.

Tola decided to revamp her wardrobe—not by buying expensive clothes but by choosing outfits that made her feel confident and reflected her value of excellence. She also started sharing her wins and lessons on social media, showing a mix of her professional and personal journey.


The Results

Within a few months, Tola’s world changed. She didn’t just get noticed—she became memorable. Her colleagues began to refer to her as the go-to person for financial advice. Opportunities came knocking, and for the first time, Tola felt like she was truly seen.
