Understanding BI Tool Capabilities

Gartner defines Modern BI platform as IT Enabled analytic content development environment with self – contained architecture that enables non-technical users to autonomously execute full spectrum analytic workflows from data access, ingestion and preparation to interactive analysis and the collaborative sharing of insights.

Modern BI platform is expected to support capabilities such as - Smart data discovery, Visual exploration, Analytics dashboards, Storytelling & Narrative, Sharing and Collaboration with open API access, while the data storage environment is usually either columnar storage or in-memory data environment supporting external data sources, on-premises sources and unstructured data through data ingestion cycle.

While some of the capabilities such as Self –Service data preparation, interactive visual exploration, analytic dashboards with sharing and collaboration is not new to Traditional BI world, there are certain new emerging capabilities that puts modern BI tools apart. Here is my attempt to group BI tool capabilities by BI functionality, Scope of deployment and Types of users
