Understanding Baselining

In project management, baselining is like setting the starting line for a race. It’s the moment when you establish a benchmark—a snapshot of your project’s initial state. Here’s why it matters:

  1. Reference Point: Baselining provides a reference point for measuring progress. You compare actual performance (where you are now) against the baseline (where you started).
  2. Detecting Deviations: If your project veers off track—budget overruns, delays, scope changes—you’ll notice because it won’t align with the baseline.
  3. Course Correction: Armed with baseline data, you can make informed decisions. Is that delay acceptable? Are costs within tolerance? Adjustments become clearer.

As a prudent project manager, you are not supposed to accept the changes in the Baseline of the project, if you accept, it may have the chances of throwing the project out of shape

Yes, any external environmental changes can be accepted based on the stake holders and sponsor's consent
