Understanding Autism

Understanding Autism

Autism is a term used to encompass a spectrum of behavioural characteristics. These include difficulties with social interaction and communication, as well as repetitive or obsessive actions and behaviour. These together are known as autistic spectrum disorder or ASD.

Each person on the autistic spectrum displays a different combination and severity of behaviours. The symptoms of autism begin in early childhood, with one early sign often being a problem maintaining eye contact.

Science does not yet understand all the factors which may contribute to the development of autism, but research has identified many possible influences. These encompass genetics, nutrition and environment.

In my latest e-book we take a closer look at these factors with a view to supporting people with autism and reducing the risk of its development.

Although estimates of the incidence of autism vary, the National Autistic Society estimates autism affects around 1 in 100 of the UK population. Figures in the USA show as many as 1 in 45 have received a diagnosis. In Hong Kong the figure is even higher, with one in every 27 children diagnosed with autism.

The condition is around six times as common in boys than in girls and is consistent against all socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. It's commonly thought the incidence of autism is on the increase, and although it's likely this is partly due to improved awareness and diagnosis of the syndrome, the significant increase in cases cannot be explained by this alone.
