Empowering professionals to develop and apply latest AI technologies responsibly.
Dear LinkedIn Community,
We wish everyone a cozy and joyful winter season!
In the last month of the year, we want to give you more insights on what the appliedAI Institute for Europe is about.
The appliedAI Institute for Europe gGmbH pursues the vision of shaping a common AI community and providing high-quality content in the age of AI for the entire society. Through resources, educational and interaction formats, we want to enable an intensive exchange of expertise and foster collaboration between stakeholders from different fields. We do so by having trustworthy AI as our main objective and by diving into it within our three focus areas.
Every Sunday we will present you one topic out of our three focus areas.
In our first expert interview, Dr. Philip Hutchinson , AI Expert, will tell us more about the AI Startup Landscape - from our focus area AI Innovation - and how startups can benefit from this offer.
What drove the initiation of the German AI Startup Landscape by appliedAI Institute for Europe, and what key objectives does it aim to achieve?
When launching the first AI Startup Landscape, we never thought that it would become the central database for AI startups not only in Germany but also in Europe. Back in 2017, by most people AI was considered to just be a trend and another technology. This, of course, is wrong. By mapping the AI startup ecosystem, we bring together the whole AI ecosystem, ranging from venture capitalists over SMEs to large corporations and political institutions. Today, basically everybody who is seriously active in the AI ecosystem uses our database.
How does this database facilitate easier access to quality AI startups for corporations and SMEs in Europe?
All startups have to fulfill a number of strict selection criteria in order to be eligible for the AI Startup Landscape. As experience shows us, only because someone says that AI is used in their product doesn’t necassarily means that this is true. Thus, for example we analyse whether the startups really use AI for their products and services on a case by case basis. Moreover, our contributors - tech companies and VCs - review the startups. For those startups that make it onto our landscape, its is a huge quality signal, which companies can rely on.
Can you discuss the collaborative efforts among appliedAI Institute for Europe gGmbH , Hub France IA , Ignite Sweden , AI Sweden , and Nederlandse AI Coalitie | NL AIC in mapping the AI startup ecosystem?
We very closely collaborate together with other European AI initiatives. This is essential as each country has its own strengths and weaknesses and we learn a lot from each other. Together, we already achieved lots of great things and will achieve many more in the upcoming year 2024.

Have there been notable impacts or success stories resulting from this initiative in driving AI adoption or facilitating partnerships between startups and corporations?
Yes, there are many success stories. For example, AI Sweden hosted a great matchmaking event between startups and large companies in Stockholm this year. A number of our German AI Startups also participated and some deals were closed which now significantly contribute towards their growth.
What are the long-term visions or future goals concerning the development and expansion of the AI startup ecosystem in Europe?
For example, we’re currently building a Use Case Platform which will be the central database for AI use cases in Europe. The European AI Startup Ecosystem will benefit from this in many many ways - such as finding targeted AI solutions for specific use cases, inspiration, increased visibility, lead generation, and gaining access to our AI ecosystem. And the best thing is - it will be openly accessable.
The European and German AI startup scenes benefit from everyone's expertise and collaboration. Looking ahead to 2024 and beyond, the landscape of AI innovation is set to keep growing. We invite you to get involved, learn, and innovate in the continually developing field of AI.
