Background of the Plan
Many of you have already travelled Dooars. Most of you can remember the safaris in Gorumara National Park or Jaldapara National Park. So you can easily say that Dooars means National Parks and Wildlife Sighting during Jungle Safaris. But this is not all about Dooars. Or rather to say this is nothing about Bengal Dooars. So, what is Bengal Dooars?
Bengal Dooars has its basic essence which is highly natural, unexplored and virgin. Bengal Dooars means many hilly rivers coming down from Himalayan mountain ranges. And after reaching the plains of Dooars, the rivers become flat and spread across vast wildland creating a vast network of water streams inside the remotest forest land. This network creates Flat Flood Bed of Bengal Dooars. These water streams are full of water during the monsoon and become dry throughout the year. The land of Flood Bed is filled with silt during monsoon and hence the vegetation grows faster and becomes dense throughout the year. As the places are remote and less human habituated, the wildlife is abundant here.
Most of these water streams within the forest land are the Wildlife corridors where plenty of wildlife sighting and birding is possible any time during a day. Both the herbivorous and the carnivorous are equally available in these virgin forests. The nature becomes so profuse that you can see the Himalayan Ranges at a distance while standing in the middle of a dry water stream surrounded by heavily dense forest all across. While you enjoy the nature at the hilly river banks and mountain ranges at a distance, the thrill and adventure of wildlife sighting is also very high. These forests are not falling under the ranges of National Parks. But due to its remoteness and less human intervention, the wildlife movement and their natural life process is always visible throughout the day.
This tour plan is drawn by Eastern Heavens in such a way that you will be travelling through the Flat Flood Beds of the Bengal Dooars. You will be enjoying the Picturesque Landscape, Panoramic View of Himalayan Mountain Ranges, Vast & Natural Wildland full of unique vegetation & wildlife of Unique Dooars. Where ever and whenever you will move in these places, you will be driving through the dry river beds surrounded by the remotest and dense forests. Enjoy the Picturesque View and the Thrill & Adventure of sudden Wildlife Sighting.

Day-3 > Raimatang – Toto Para – Jayanti Flood Bed Safari
Post breakfast drive out for Raimatang – Raimatang is a village inside Buxa Tiger Reserve – The unique location of the village inside the forest and close to Bhutan border and its beautiful surrounding has made it an attractive offbeat tourist destination of Dooars – Raimatang does not have strong tourism infrastructure, there are a few homestay type accommodations run by local people – Hence the place is still a virgin remote place for the offbeat place lovers – The total area of the village is less than a square kilometer and from one place to another is hardly 5 to 10 minutes walk – The main road passes West to East, originating from the riverbed and ending at the forest bungalow – A parallel road further south goes inside the village where most of the tourist accommodations are located – The village has a total of less than a hundred household and there is no big shop in the village – There are several small streams coming from Indian and Bhutanese hills to form the Raimatang Khola, the river that surrounds the North and West of Raimatang and crossing it is an experience in itself – The river seems to be a few small streams passing through a wide river basin anytime in the year except the Monsoon – When the monsoon downpour starts the small stream becomes a huge body of water and crossing the river becomes very risky, sometimes for weeks Raimatang remains completely disconnected from the rest of the world – A few kilometers downstream, the river passes through Gangutia tea garden – The river also changes its name and is now referred to as Gangutia – Little further down it meets with another stream known as Buxa Khola, together they now become Dima river – The journey to Raimatang really starts after you cross Kalchini, a small hamlet in Dooars surrounded by tea gardens and forests that is about 160 km from NJP / Bagdogra and 35 km from Alipurduar Junction – From Kalchini you drive through tea garden roads, as you pass Chuapara, Gangutia, and Mechpara tea gardens and suddenly reach the riverbed of Raimatangkhola – Both sides of Dima river is densely forested that has been there from time immemorial – The next 4 km you will be driving through the riverbed – This makes Raimatang inaccessible during the rainy season – There is no proper road or bridge over the river and occasionally you might have to get down from the vehicle to give it a small push – Be careful to travel only in a high ground clearance SUV or MUV as they are the only ones able to negotiate the sand and pebbles of the riverbed – After about 30 minutes drive through the Dima riverbed, you will emerge on the other side of the river and enter the village of Raimatang
Your next destination is Totopara – Toto a small Tibeto-Burman language speaking autochthones tribe living in Totopara bounded on the north by Bhutan, on the east by the Torsha River and on the south by the Titi Forest – Toto people migrated from Bhutan to Totopara, after they had a feud with ‘Doya’ community of Mongoloid origin – After 1865 Indo-Bhutan war, few Totos migrated to the interiors of Bhutan and the rest of the population still resides at Totopara – Totos were on the verge of extinction – The population of Totos was always a concern – Their population in 1901 was 171, in 1951 it increased to 321 – However, concerted efforts from Govt. has helped to conserve their unique culture and tradition and also augmented their population – As per 2011 census, Totopara has a population of 2960 – As per the Anthropological Survey of India, Toto population is endangered – However, Toto language is far more endangered – Totopara is in the confluence of Bengali and Nepali speaking population, and this has adulterated aboriginal Toto language – Toto people are identified by their houses – A traditional Toto house builds with bamboo, straw, and clay – These are huts with four folded roof make with straw, and all roofs are joined at the top elevation and decline towards the sidewall – Generally, they keep cattle beneath their houses – The road from Madarihat to Totopara is about 22 km – The ride is a joy of the heart – There are stretches of forest on both sides of the road – Wildlife frequents the place quite often – You will come across few forest villages and lush green tea estates like Hantapara – The scenic beauty of the place is indescribable in words – The road condition is bumpy and at places, there is no road and we will have to cross six semi-dry mountain rivers before you reach Totopara – Return home by lunch.
Complete your lunch and get ready for an exciting and adventurous Jayanti Flood Bed Safari – Drive out on the river bed of river Gadadhar – Jayanti is one of the last untouched pristine destinations of Dooars overlooking nature’s bountiful beauty – The lush green dense forest, the once untamed river and the far off hills – Although the Jayanti River remains dry most of the time in a year, the white stone pebbles are strewn all over the river bed and its shores, still form the natural border between the daunting Bhutan Hills – On the eastern side of the river lies the Jayanti Hills while on the western side lies serenely delightful Jayanti village – The thriving faunal existence ranges from leopards and elephants to spotted deer and peacocks – The abundant greenery of the forest and the fresh oxygen is surely a perfect place to leisure around to escape the regular mundane city life – The music of the flowing river, the chirping of unknown birds, the rustic woody smell of the forest will refresh your mind and soul – Encountering a herd of elephants or spotted deer or even peacocks is not at all an uncommon sight – The pictorial scenic beauty, the trekking trails, the rustling of the leaves, the sound of the forest wind, and the song of the birds while travelling through the wildland will give you the heebie-jeebies.
Your next target on the Jayanti River Bed is Bhutia Basti Watch Tower – Bhutia Basti is just another interesting point to feel the smell of dense forest – Bhutia Basti is 1.5 km away from Jayanti Village – The thrilling journey starts from Jayanti crossing the Jayanti river and walk through the dense Buxa Forest with chirping sound of numerous known and unknown birds, song of wild streams and the fragrance of virgin nature – Bhutia Basti also called the “Den of Elephants” – Where ever you will visit in the Jayanti River Bed Network, you will surely enjoy the thrill an adventure of the dense wildland amidst the panoramic view of the Himalayan Mountain Ranges at Bhutan.
