The Underbelly, Issue #38

The Underbelly, Issue #38

Hello There!

At 7 a.m., my alarm goes off. But honestly? I’m usually already awake.

Why? Because my mind is busy sorting through a laundry list of tasks: client deadlines, templates I’m working on, and that networking event I promised I’d attend. This is usually how most of my days start, going through tasks in my head.

As solo professionals, a lot of times what people see from the outside is you looking like you have everything together.

However, what most people don’t see is the Underbelly.

In today’s newsletter, I’ll be sharing a glimpse into my day as a virtual assistant to shed light on this unseen side of being a solo professional.

By 8 a.m., I’m sometimes knee-deep in market research for a client, looking up new streamlining tools that can help with workflow. It’s not always billable work because I’m also educating myself in areas of new technology and tools that help with workflow processes. Even when it’s not required, I always like to stay informed.?

At 9 a.m., I’m in full problem-solving mode because a frantic client needs assistance with an email campaign journey that’s not performing the way it’s supposed to. So I figure that out and then move on to the next client, and then to the next.

By the time lunch time rolls around, I quickly make some instant oatmeal with some berries and fruit and during that time I attend a networking event, or listen to a podcast or e-book about leadership that helps me to improve my skills. These are all investments that I make in order to refine my craft that may all seem invisible to others, but essential for my competitive edge.

The Quiet Work

As solo professionals, people may often be in awe of our results, but they don’t always grasp the depth of work behind them. The trials and error, late nights and countless hours spent mastering our crafts. And for me that is okay, because my job as a virtual assistant is to make it look easy.?

That’s what the underbelly is, it’s the work, effort and dedication that others rarely see, but it’s what sets you apart from the other person. I’m not saying that my unseen qualities deserve recognition, but it’s a major part of how successful you will be and the type of clients you attract.

I am very grateful to have clients that recognize these qualities that I possess and commend me about them regularly. The truth is, that I have a deep commitment to this work as a virtual assistant that goes beyond making money. I want for my clients what I want for myself, and that is helping them envision possibilities they hadn’t considered before.

The Bottom Line:

Even though your underbelly might not always be obvious, remember that it’s what sets you apart and it’s the reason your clients keep coming back.

I tell myself that the world may not see every step, but my results tell the story. And to me that story is worth sharing.

Keep shining behind the scenes.

Funny how we're up earlier than our own personal schedules and still doing work. I'm up early for meditation, but also found myself working at 4am. And these tips are helpful!!

Shamayne Brown LOVE that you are staying on top of tech trends and new streamlining tools that can help with workflow. Not every VA does that and it will give you the competitive edge, plus business owners always like to say that they are working with the latest tools. Well younger generations anyways, maybe not the dinosaurs haha. ps: Love the joke of the day haha.
