In #Education or at #Work, disdain can arise when someone brings-up the #Past. It may be about a #Classroom #Lesson weeks ago or a recent #Class. It could be about a #Project that an #Employee recalls someone ‘doing something wrong’ recently or ‘years ago’ – or about a #Scandal or disagreement in a #Workflow amidst #Staff #Workspaces. A messenger uses #Storytelling to present information and scenario, embellishing just a bit, and finishes with key points and a #Conclusion about the #Experience, its #Impact, and the #People involved.
-- We often share #Stories of #Life, #Family, and #Career – sometimes with #Judgment --
When #Teaching and #Learning, #Context matters and aids #Understanding of #Purpose and #Meaning in a #Storyline. On the #Job with #CoWorkers, a #Boss or #Supervisor, and even #Customers, a #Story adds #Insight as to #Actions taken and #Decisions made – often through an ‘after-the-fact’ lens. Yet is that fair? Does an account as given match the context or nuances of ‘then versus now’? What #Truth or #Relevance – and yes, #Bias – is contained in any #Underlying #Experiences for a #Current or #Future situation and its circumstances?
(0) What Lies beneath? Discern & Identify True Emotion
Is the #Portrayal given realistic – or does it at least prompt a #Mindset – to understand what the #Information reveals? Whether ‘old’ or ‘new’ it divulges or betrays the true emotion of a teller and a listener, past and present. That myriad layers and underlying interpretations exist is to be expected. When pursuing a #Program, in #Education or #Management, such a find is unremarkable. More crucially, what #Perspective and #Persona – some may say #Personality and #Politics – drive context, #Content, #Deliverables, and #Outcomes. Is there an underlying trepidation based upon #Fear, #Disagreement, or past #Grievances – or an Under-Lying Bias?
-- What #Baggage from the Past brings forward (#Motivation and/or #Lies) --
Whether #Real or #Imaginary, what lies beneath reactions by any #Student or #Professional to a #Project #Assignment – and its #Grading or #Assessment? Is it someone #Lying or another’s misunderstanding of #Instruction or #Expectations? Is the experience perceived as an #Insult, #Misunderstanding of #Innovation, or #Professional #Development? Is it #Skills and #Abilities mixed with #Judgement? #Students define #Success differently from #Professors; #Employees define recognition of their work beyond #Promotion and #Salary by #Management. Is there an Under-Lying expectation that Lies are breeding distrust v. truthful Motivation (#Teamwork)?
(1) Gaps in Meaning: Underlying Experiences as missed #Opportunities
Any #Story has a personal context, even a #Fable or #GreekMythology, yet it is not predefined except through an objective analytical process. An #Allegory is as useless as a #Shakespeare play without an underlying construct or #Perspective of the #People, #Culture, and #History. A #Business #Template or #Computer application or #Model is useless in a #Workflow without knowledge of how it was created and for what purposes. These #Gaps foster misapplication, misunderstanding, and misinterpretation – enlarging an underlying lack of #Meaning, raising #Suspicion. They can create and perpetuate false conclusions by any #Team member.
-- #Mistaken #Beliefs or #UrbanLegend? Damaging and Harmful Impacts --
It is #Dangerous and #Costly in #Pedagogy and #Business when defining others’ experiences, in real-time or over centuries and millennia, according to a current situation and context – or our own. To be sure there are parallels, but how much of an original underlying experience is morphed or transformed to fit ours? It may be for context, but is that fair, poetic license, or an inappropriate or misinformed approach? To learn from the past – and from others – is to relate and translate a broader #Analogy or #Metaphor in #Meaningful context. An #Opportunity for #DeepLearning, not a rote regurgitation with significance defined by one #Conceptual model.
(2) Realization of Experiential Achievements Leads to [REAL] Success
To avoid fitting (forcing) our own model? #Listening, a #Skill incomplete and underdeveloped if used to do no more than ‘relay’ someone’s concerns or thoughts about a #Lecture, #Lab, or #Progress #Report – or #Job #Performance. If only to #Transform and #Transmit, then our listening is misguided. Ineffective #Managers neither #Listen nor seek to truly understand underlying issues with any depth (or emotion); ineffective #Learners tend to do the same with #SubjectMatter. To #Learn and #Manage effectively means using Listening as a comprehensive #SoftSkill that includes #Discourse, #Interaction, and #Communication of others’ experiences.
-- People “Hearing without Listening” is not Emotional Intelligence, it's dismissive --
True Listening explores with #Imagination and evokes #Innovation – connecting #Emotion of #Self with Motivation, and that of others. At #Work it is a ‘more excellent way’ to #Success. Use of an innate #Authentic #Intelligence – not “The Sound of Silence” – is to capture the essence of a shared live-action experiential story. When speaking of #Accomplishment, their #Pride, #Worth, #Thanksgiving, and #Justification emotes deep understanding. #Accolades show the important roles of others in their #Journey of #Advancement (and Learning). Deeper Listening provides #Benefits to all and creates ‘REAL’ Success among a #Team (#Classmates).
(3) “Misunderstanding all you see” – Which interpretation fits?
Realization of Experiential Achievements Leads to REAL Success by a #Community and each #Individual in Learning and Working #Environments – but only with direct #Participation, #Engagement, and #Investment. Acknowledgment of the worth of a person’s sole and shared experiences is essential when building capital. An effective #Strategy that supports #Growth in #School and within a #Career demands #Justification. It matters if the focus is always on the negative side of things – “Misunderstanding [noun] all you see” – rather than the positive.

If we fail to engage personally with the ‘full’ person (student, coworker, #Friend, or #Family), then it is strictly a personal matter of “Misunderstanding [verb] all you see” as we interpret and fit others’ experiences only to our terms and frame of understanding. Those Under-Lying Experiences deceive us as to what truly lies beneath ourselves and others. While “Living is easy with eyes closed” it’s not good #Policy in #StudentLearning nor #StudentSuccess (#College or #K12). Creating only a #Myopic #Vision, using another’s experiential story, is not productive for #Employees or #Students. Experiential Listening & Emotional Intelligence are required.

That’s the Bigger ‘Y’ – What if we deny or lie about the existence, meaning, and importance of experiential listening? It belies a dismissive attitude that does not value relevance in the #Educational enterprise or its Future. Recognizing and using true emotional experiential attachments matters.? That same #Truth exists in the #Office #Workplace and in #ProfessionalDevelopment. Being 'all-ears' – and attentive – is quite useful to everyone.
