"UNDER"
Rethinking "Under" : How about some MAGIC Here?
I often hear people saying : I've got 25 People Under Me. In my opinon_Nobody is actually Under anyone!
The word "under" is used rampantly in the corporate world. We use it to describe teams and leadership structures.
Asking it loud to everyone: Is this term truly reflective of the collaborative and progressive workplaces we strive for today?
Beyond the Hierarchy: While traditional hierarchies exist, focusing solely on who's "under" who can feel outdated. Modern workplaces emphasize teamwork and collaboration.?
Here's how we could shift to create some magic:
From: How many people do you have under you? To: How big is your team? / How many people do you collaborate with?
Focus on Teams, Not Subordinates: Instead of highlighting who reports to whom, let's showcase the team dynamic:
From: S/he works under me. MAGIC: S/he's part of my team or reports to me. (For a more formal setting)
Experience Matters, Not Ranking: When discussing fit within a team, focus on skills and experience, not past encounters:
From: I cannot work under him as s/he was junior to me in the University.

MAGIC: I wouldn't be a good fit for a position where s/he's the lead, given our experience levels. (This focuses on qualifications) / Our experience levels might lead to a better fit in a different team structure. (This is more neutral)
Expressing Interest in a Team: When in Interview, showcase your enthusiasm for the project or team, not just the leader:
From: Sir/Ma'am, I would love to work under you.
MAGIC: I'm very interested in working on your team. / I'd be honored to be part of your project. (This focuses on the team/project)
Building a More Positive Work Environment:
This shift in language might seem subtle, but it reflects a broader cultural change towards a more positive and inclusive work experience.
Let's not forget the impact on employee morale. In my viewpoint, constant reminders of a hierarchy through words like "under" can create a power dynamic that might feel demotivating.
By adopting these alternatives and magical way or expressing, we could cultivate a work environment that fosters collaboration, highlights individual strengths, and creates a sense of belonging within a team, moving away from the rigid connotations of "UNDER."
Cheers!
