Undecided voters back Coalition

The number of voters who are undecided 3 days out from the election has dropped by 10% in the last week, with almost of this gain going to the Coalition. 30.2% of voters are still undecided, according to a poll conducted online on June 28-9. The national poll, of 1,105 people, was conducted by Consumer Behaviour using Google Consumer Surveys, shows that the Coalition (27.9%) leads Labor (25%) and Greens (15%).

It posed the question:

If the federal election for the house of representatives was held today, which one of the following would you vote for? If unsure, which are you leaning towards?

The undecided vote has dropped from 40.5% a week ago, with many of these undecided voters now intending to vote Coalition. As at June 20-21 the poll revealed just 18.3% intending to vote Coalition, suggesting the Brexit effect is working to the Coalition’s advantage.

The primary vote for Labor and the Greens has not changed.

The poll also suggests a level of apathy with many of those who remain undecided. As one respondent said:

“None of them - their focus needs to change from power & control for themselves to what's good for the people of Australia.”

And with around a third still undecided, Labor or a hung parliament remain a real possibility.

Why are these results different to traditional polls?

Google Consumer Surveys use a unique methodology compared to traditional online and telephone polling. Surveys are sent to people via a publisher network, and the Opinion Rewards app. In the US. Google Consumer Surveys was found to be the 2nd most reliable poll out of 25 reviewed by Nate Silvers, the well regarded US polling commentator. They came 2nd to Investors’ Business Daily (IDP/TIPP) who conducted their poll using live telephone polling including to mobile phones., and ahead of Ipsos/Reuters and Gallup, in the 2012 US election.
