Uncovering a sense of place in Western Sydney

As we prepare for our move to 8 Parramatta Square later this year, our teams have been busy designing a true workplace of the future that will transform the way our people work every day.

An important part of this process is designing an art narrative for our new workplace that captures identity and culture and nurtures a sense of place.

It’s no small task, but the Strategy and Applied Design team in Deloitte Digital have done a phenomenal job and have captured what I believe is the essence of Western Sydney.

It’s no secret that Western Sydney has experienced rapid and sustained growth in recent years, and I can’t think of a more exciting time for the region.

Western Sydney has been on an incredible journey, which is in large part due to increased government and business investment.

So, what does Western Sydney represent and mean to the community?

Through research and interviews with our teams and other relevant stakeholders, the team in Deloitte Digital has unpacked a real sense of place in Western Sydney.

Some of the themes that emerged include:

Western Sydney is made up of strong and supportive communities that foster a deep sense of home, for both the multi-generational residents and those coming to the city hoping to find somewhere to belong.

Throughout my career I’ve had the pleasure of living in a few different places but having been the leader of Deloitte’s Western Sydney Office for over three years now, I can safely say that I’ve never felt a greater sense of belonging and purpose than I do right here in Western Sydney.

Its textured identity falls out of the many histories of its inhabitants and the incredible breadth of ideas, faiths, capabilities, expressions, ethnicities, races, sexualities, ages – the region is a textured weave of these, each accepting, supporting and strengthening the others.

Western Sydney is unique and diverse, but the drive amongst those who reside in the region is the same – the future is bright in Western Sydney. Full of opportunity and ambition, we have the resources, jobs and infrastructure to succeed.

It’s a place of great opportunity, ambitious and excited by growth… but not for individual gain, ambition is grounded in a sense of serving the collective good, of the city, the state, the nation and the world.

I think this final point speaks to the enormous potential and collective purpose that we, as a community, all feel. The future is bright, investment is not slowing down and we are seeing enormous population growth each year.

A huge well done to the Deloitte Digital team for their incredible work on this project.

Next, I’ll be unpacking Deloitte’s identity in the region, and our deep connection to Western Sydney, watch out for this article in the coming weeks.
