Beyond the demographic and competition benefits, Bing Ads (rebranded into Microsoft Advertising) also offers robust targeting options. While it's true that Google has a more extensive array of targeting features, Bing has honed in on a more selective targeting approach, which can be incredibly effective. For example, Bing allows advertisers to target LinkedIn audiences by company, job function, and industry, given Microsoft's ownership of LinkedIn (do not forget: Outside of LinkedIn itself, Microsoft Advertising is the only digital advertising platform to offer LinkedIn Profile Targeting). This is a distinctive feature that is not available on Google Ads and can be particularly beneficial for B2B marketers.
Another factor to consider is the quality of traffic. Some advertisers report that the traffic from Bing converts at a higher rate than Google. This could be due to the audience’s demographic or the fact that Bing users are less bombarded with ads and therefore may be more receptive to the ones they do see. This is particularly relevant for advertisers whose products and services align with the interests and needs of an older and wealthier demographic. From my experience, Bing consistently delivered a Click-Through Rate (CTR) that was 3% to 7% higher compared to Google.
Bing Ads also keeps pace with ad format innovation, offering a suite of ad extensions that can be tailored to match the functionality of Google's. For instance, Bing's Action Extensions, similar to Google's Call to Action Extensions, allow advertisers to add a clickable button to their ads, prompting users to take actions like 'Call,' 'Download,' 'Book,' or 'Order.' Even though these features are available on both platforms, the way they interact with users can differ based on the search engine's context and audience behaviors, potentially affecting click-through rates and overall conversion performance.
The user interface of Microsoft Advertising stands out, especially for businesses that may not have the resources to hire dedicated PPC specialists. Its user-friendly design simplifies campaign management, and the platform takes convenience one step further with its robust import function. This tool doesn’t just allow for a one-time transfer of existing campaigns from Google Ads; it can be scheduled to automatically import selected campaigns as frequently as every day (they do have an Automatic schedule, which is even less than one time per day). This ensures that campaign updates or new initiatives on Google Ads can be reflected almost in real-time on Microsoft Advertising, enabling businesses to maintain synchronized campaigns across both platforms with minimal manual intervention.
Furthermore, Bing Ads also offers advertisers a high level of transparency and control over their search partner network. Unlike Google, where it can be challenging to discern where your ads might appear in the extended network, Bing allows advertisers to see which search partners are driving traffic and at what cost. This transparency can be incredibly valuable when optimizing campaigns for the best ROI.
In terms of return on investment, Bing Ads can offer surprisingly high returns. This is because many industries still undervalue Bing's potential (less competition!), resulting in lower bid prices for keywords that would be more expensive on Google. Advertisers who recognize this can capitalize on the opportunity to achieve a high ad position with a lower investment, possibly achieving a better return on ad spend (ROAS) than they would on Google.

Lastly, it's important to note that Bing is not standing still. Microsoft is continually updating and improving Bing Ads, adding new features and capabilities that allow it to compete more directly with Google. For advertisers who are willing to explore and adapt to these features, Bing Ads can serve as a fertile ground for innovation and growth.
In summary, while Google Ads may be the titan of the industry, Bing Ads should not be disregarded. With its unique audience, potentially higher conversion rates, innovative ad formats, and lower competition, it represents an untapped opportunity for many advertisers. By integrating Bing Ads into their overall digital marketing strategy, businesses can uncover new avenues for growth and connect with valuable segments of the market that their competitors might be overlooking.
In brief, Microsoft Advertising offers the advantage of lower competition, cost-effective pricing, and a seamless import process from Google Ads.
