Not to be confused with the book The Age of Influence by Neal ?? Schaffer but I’m sure he’s seeing an uptick in sales with the release of the docuseries.
The Age of Influence is more than a docuseries; it's a masterclass in understanding the creator culture that dominates news coverage and marketing budgets. It uncovers the ethical dilemmas, potential pitfalls, and the power dynamics at play in the industry.?
Why this matters:?
The insights and key learnings can arm you with the knowledge to make informed decisions, protect your brand's reputation, and design effective creator marketing campaigns. It’s always better to learn from the mistakes of others.?

The Age of Influence dives into the stormy seas of creator culture, surfacing with juicy scandals you may not have heard about. Each episode profiles a different influencer and their rollercoaster journey from viral sensation to trending topic for all the wrong reasons.
The series starts with Danielle Miller, who went from a revenge porn victim to a credit card scam maestro in record time. Her path detoured Rikers Island due to a $1.5 million COVID relief fraud scheme. She used stolen identities and fabricated business names to swindle pandemic-relief funds, funding a lifestyle that would make a Kardashian smirk.
This docuseries peels back some of the scandalous layers of creator culture, exposing manipulative tactics and exploitative behavior. It offers a 360-degree view from victims to influencers' ex-besties and other creators.

The series also spotlights influencers who've stumbled from grace, including Jay Mazini, a kidnapping and fraud convict; Emily Gellis, a fashion influencer who stirred up a social media storm; and Essena O'Neill, an Instagram star who quit the influencer rat race.
Key Takeaways for Marketers
This docuseries is as crucial for marketers as remembering your social media passwords. It offers insights into influencer culture, revealing ethical booby traps and potential pitfalls of partnering with influencers. With this knowledge, marketers can make intelligent choices when selecting influencers and ensure transparent collaborations.
The series underscores the power influencers wield and the potential fallout when misusing power, leading to scandals that can tarnish their image and the brands they endorse. It's a wake-up call for marketers to add rigor and data before collaborating with creators.
Lastly, the docuseries offers a peek into the minds of influencers and their followers. Understanding influencers' motivations, justifications, and regrets can help marketers navigate these relationships more effectively. Similarly, grasping the dynamics between influencers and their followers can give marketers insights into consumer behavior, enabling them to design more impactful creator marketing programs.

1 年I'm a few episodes in and it's not what I was expecting. Important topic but I don't think it's really telling the story with impact or clarity. The one thing I do like is that these aren't noteworthy cases that the average person would know. Could have been punchier 30 minutes episodes instead of a lot of back and forth he said/she said. Would have loved more commentary on the broader industry by experts, and not just a few journalists. The need for fact checking & background checks now in influencer marketing being something that should have been highlighted.
