Uncommon Sense: And Apple Cider Rice Krispies

Uncommon Sense: And Apple Cider Rice Krispies

A bi-weekly note that shares ideas and thoughts around family, finances, and food that your parents should have taught you.

Don't compromise the things that mean the most to you...

I had the privilege of having Jen Ryan on the Owners Table Podcast for the second time recently. If you haven’t had the chance to listen to her episode, you can give it a listen by clicking this link here!?

She shared so many things that were so good for those parents/high level leaders out there.?

If you want to be a successful business owner, husband or wife, father or mother, etc…you have to have those things in your life that you will not compromise.?

If you don’t have those uncompromisable routines/values in your life, maybe it’s time to create them…BECAUSE it will help you prioritize the things that mean the most to you.?

For example, when I asked Jen about three things she absolutely WILL NOT compromise in her life, she told me these three things:?

1. Morning Routine?

  • This is a critical time for any great parent, spouse, and/or leader.?
  • Whether it be reading, meditation/prayer, and working out…or working out, reading, and mediation/prayer, find something that works for you and invest in yourself.?
  • If you do not have a morning routine, I would highly recommend starting one. Watch how far you’ll go just by implementing that.?

2. Family Dinner?

  • If you have a family, spending quality time with your family is so crucial.?
  • For Jen, it’s a family dinner every night…for us, it is “Couch Time”. “Couch Time” is time where Jackie and I?talk on the couch while watching our kids play. They can’t interrupt us, but they can see us investing in each other while they play.
  • These moments with your family mean the world to them. Don’t compromise it and watch your family grow closer and closer together.?

3. Bath Time?

  • I did not expect this one, but it makes so much sense.?
  • Jen and her husband give their kids a bath to wind down every night.?
  • She describes this as a time to forget about everything and focus on each other.?

It’s amazing to me how my three things are pretty similar to Jen’s. The three things I absolutely WILL NOT compromise are:?

1. Time With Jesus?

  • This is my main priority in my morning routine.?
  • I read my Bible every morning. Never miss a day.?
  • This is so important to me because Jesus has to be number one in my life. If he is, everything else will take care of itself.?

2. Fitness/Health?

  • I work out every day.?
  • Some days are better than others, but every day I do some kind of exercise.?
  • If I feel good I perform better as a leader, spouse, father, etc.?

3. Quality Time With My Wife?

  • I am trying to get better at this one.?
  • It can be tough because of how much we are on the road.
  • However, I am striving every week to have quality/uninterrupted time with my wife. This means the world to the both of us, and helps us so much.?

Like I said before, if you do not have those things in your life that you don’t compromise I would highly recommend you?implement those things/routines TODAY.?

Start by finding the things that you value most in life and implement routines to ensure your spending time in those areas consistently.

The key to success is consistency...

The key to success is consistency

I own an elevated catering company in Birmingham, AL called Table & Thyme. We provide a personalized elevated catering experience for baby showers, birthdays, cocktail parties, and everything in between.?

When I started this company back in August of 2019, I made one of the best decisions ever. I hired the marketing company, Hopson Rae, to ensure our marketing efforts displayed how great Table & Thyme truly is…and it did just that.?

Aurrie Hicks is the owner of Hopson Rae, and she and her team do a fabulous job of consistently producing incredible content. The key word in that sentence is CONSISTENTLY.?

After around four years of consistently producing quality content, Aurrie and her team posted this video on Sunday, March 5th, 2023. The next morning, the Table & Thyme instagram account went from having 5,000 followers to having over 40,000 followersOVERNIGHT.

This video remains one of our most viewed videos with over 4.5 millions views! With that, we are able to reach so many more people and our business has skyrocketed.?

The moral of the story is consistency. This was video number 208 that blew up for my company. That’s over 3 years worth of work and it finally paid off.?

If you want to be successful, you better be consistent.

So many people want to be at the top, but are you willing to put in the CONSISTENT work that it takes to get there??

Apple Cider Rice Krispies

Cook time: 45 min

Ingredients:

  • ? cup unsalted butter, plus more for greasing
  • 2 cups apple cider or unfiltered apple juice
  • 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 10 oz bags mini marshmallows, divided (about 11 cups total)
  • ? tsp kosher salt
  • 1 12 oz box rice cereal, such as Rice Krispies
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Instructions:

  1. In a large heavy-bottomed pot or Dutch oven set over medium heat, melt the butter. Continue cooking, stirring often to prevent the milk solids from burning, until the butter foams and darkens into a light amber color and smells nutty, 4 to 6 minutes. Immediately add the apple cider, increase the heat to high, and bring to a boil. Let the cider boil, stirring occasionally, until it reduces into a thick, bubbling caramel-like consistency that coats the back of a spoon, 18 to 20 minutes.
  2. As the cider is reducing, grease a 9x13-inch glass or metal baking pan. In a small bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon.
  3. Once the cider has reduced, add one bag of marshmallows and salt and continue cooking over high heat, stirring constantly, until the marshmallows melt and darken into a light caramel color, 3 to 4 minutes.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat and add the remaining bag of marshmallows. Stir just until the marshmallows are about half melted, then add the rice cereal. Gently but quickly mix everything together until the rice cereal is evenly coated in the marshmallow mixture and immediately transfer into the prepared baking pan. Gently press the mixture into an even layer using a spatula sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture over the top and let set for at least 1 hour before cuttingPrefer a how-to video? Catch it here!

3 Things?I Bought This Week:

  • Deodorant...we buy because we feel like its pretty clean.
  • Soap we use...add to a dispenser and add water. Use as hand soap or bath soap. We love this stuff.
  • Knives...I bought these for my kitchen staff. It's a good knife that is good for home or commercial kitchen use.
