Quote:

"We need the courage to learn from our past and not live in it."

- Sharon Salzberg

Reflection:

Have you ever been walking down the street or washing the dishes when suddenly a difficult memory pops in your mind? You feel your face flush. Your muscles tighten. And the foggy replay of the memory floods over you. You can feel the negative emotions you felt on that day resurface in you now — discomfort, sadness, regret, anger — whatever they may be. Even though the event happened years ago, it's as if you're living in it now.

Episodes like this are a sign that we haven't come to terms with how a particular event in our past unfolded. We haven't accepted it or dealt with it. We haven't let it go. So it lingers somewhere deep in our subconscious and it resurfaces without warning — jolting us out of the present and back to that uncomfortable place.

Action:

Letting go of our past takes courage and discipline. We need the courage to come to peace with it, to find a way to learn from it. And we need the discipline to let the past remain where it belongs — in the past.

The next time you feel a difficult memory from your past resurface in you, take a deep breath and ask yourself: What can I learn from this event? How can I come to terms with it? How can I bring my mind and body back to where they ought to be — right here and now?

Have a mindful Wednesday and see you next week!
