Circle, Tether freezes over $65M in assets transferred from Multichain

Stablecoin issuers Circle and Tether have frozen more than $65 million in assets related to a potential exploit of the Multichain protocol. The freezing came after large amounts of money were withdrawn from the Multichain MPC bridge on July 6. Several addresses receiving millions of dollars in USD Coin (USDC) and Tether (USDT) have been frozen. The withdrawals affected multiple cryptocurrency networks, and the exact cause is still unclear. Multichain has temporarily suspended its services, warning users not to use the bridging service. The CEO of Fantom protocol stated that the fund transfer appears to be an unusual hack, and investigations are ongoing. Multichain has been facing challenges since its leadership disappeared. Crypto bridges like Multichain have been frequent targets for hackers, with numerous incidents reported in the past. A recent report by SlowMist revealed that over $30 billion in crypto assets have been hacked since 2012, with exchange hacks being the most common. Click here for more.

Coinbase was aware of securities law violations, SEC claims in letter

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has responded to Coinbase's claim that it lacks jurisdiction to prosecute the crypto exchange. The SEC stated that Coinbase was aware that federal securities laws could apply to its operations and had informed its shareholders about the possibility of assets traded on its platform being classified as securities. The regulator argued that Coinbase, being a large entity with sophisticated legal counsel, is deliberately ignoring established legal precedents to create its own criteria for investment contracts. The response came after Coinbase notified the court of its intention to file a motion for judgment, citing statements made by SEC Chair Gary Gensler and the timing of the charges filed against the company. The SEC charged Coinbase in June for allegedly offering unregistered securities since 2019. A pre-motion conference is scheduled for July 13. Click here for more.

Over $765K worth of NFTs stolen after SIM swap attack on Gutter Cat Gang

Around $765,000 worth of nonfungible tokens (NFTs) has been stolen in a SIM swap attack targeting the Gutter Cat Gang NFT project. The project's Twitter accounts were compromised, and the hackers shared fake limited edition NFT sneaker airdrops, tricking users into clicking on links that drained their wallets. The tweets included branding and imagery from the project's partnership with Puma and NBA player LaMelo Ball. A prominent blockchain sleuth suggested that the team was hacked through a SIM swap attack and criticized their cybersecurity practices. Victims of the attack lost significant amounts of valuable NFTs from various collections. The Gutter Cat Gang team is working with Twitter to regain access to the compromised accounts and is cooperating with law enforcement for investigation. The project consists of 3,000 unique NFT cartoon cat avatars, and the current floor price for the NFTs has increased substantially since its launch. Click here for more.

Elon Musk’s lawyers respond to motion to kick Tesla team off Dogecoin case: ‘Waste of this court’s time’

Elon Musk and Tesla have requested a United States district court judge to dismiss a motion seeking sanctions against them in a $258 billion lawsuit alleging Musk's involvement in an illegal racketeering scheme related to Dogecoin. The motion was filed by a lawyer representing the plaintiffs, Evan Spencer, who claimed a conflict of interest in Musk and Tesla's legal representation. Musk and Tesla's legal team responded, calling Spencer's motion unsubstantiated and frivolous. They argued that there is no conflict of interest under New York law and accused Spencer of filing frivolous motions to delay court proceedings. The defense team also denied leaking a letter to the New York Post and stated that it was Spencer who introduced the letter to the jury pool. Click here for more.

BIS develops framework against CBDC cyberattacks

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has released a framework to protect central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) from cybersecurity threats. The BIS emphasized the need to address security risks faced by CBDC systems, citing recent smart contract hacks in decentralized finance (DeFi) that resulted in significant losses. The framework includes seven steps, such as preparing, identifying, protecting, detecting, responding, recovering, and adapting. These steps translate into 104 control objectives, including continuous monitoring, securing cryptographic keys, and implementing DDoS protection. The BIS recommended the establishment of a central bank leadership team, a chief security officer, and various IT, security, and stakeholder teams to execute the framework. While cautious about DeFi, the BIS has been supportive of CBDC adoption and has previously proposed unified-ledger solutions for cross-border transactions and collaborated on distributed ledger technology with the Bank of England.
