Tether Used Fake Documents to Open Bank Accounts
Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, has been accused by the Wall Street Journal of using problematic third parties that used "hundreds of millions of dollars of seized assets and connections to a designated terrorist organization." The U.S. Justice Department is reportedly investigating the company. Tether denies the claims, saying the report is "wholly inaccurate and misleading." Tether's business is minting USDT, which is the most-traded digital asset and the third-largest cryptocurrency after Bitcoin and Ethereum. It is used as a stablecoin, particularly in markets where dollars are restricted or unavailable, and in DeFi. Tether is yet to provide documentation proving that its stablecoin is backed by U.S. dollars, and it is not independently audited. More information can be found here .
Uniswap wants to launch mobile wallet, but Apple won’t greenlight its launch
Uniswap Labs plans to release a self-custodial mobile wallet that allows users to swap on layer-1 or layer-2 networks without switching blockchain, according to a tweet by the company. The wallet will allow users to check price charts and search for any token across various networks, including Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum and Optimism. Seed phrases and private keys will be encrypted and stored on devices using Apple’s Secure Enclave, Uniswap Labs said. The company had the first build of the wallet approved in October, but has faced issues with Apple’s App Store regarding the mobile wallet. Here again we can see the disproportionate power of monopolies or duepolies having a say what can be uploaded on their platform and what not. More information can be found here .
US legislators renew call for EPA investigation of crypto mining emissions data
US Senator Edward Markey and Representative Jared Huffman are reintroducing the Crypto-Asset Environmental Transparency Act in Congress. The proposed bill would require crypto mining companies to disclose their emissions for operations consuming more than 5 megawatts of power, and mandate a $5m interagency investigation on the environmental impact of crypto mining in the US. The bill is being introduced ahead of a Senate hearing on March 7th, which will focus on the environmental impact of crypto mining and which Markey will chair. The previous version of the bill, which the two Democrats first introduced in December, did not pass. More information can be found here .
India explores offline functionality of CBDCs
India's central bank, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), is testing the offline functionality of its digital currency, the digital rupee. The wholesale segment pilot, launched in November 2022, has seen 50,000 users and 5,000 merchants complete $134m worth of transactions. The RBI is now exploring the potential for cross-border transactions and legacy system linkage. The CBDC is expected to act as a replacement for cryptocurrencies and will have all features of physical currency, including anonymity. Additionally, the national payment network, the unified payments interface (UPI), has expanded its services to Singapore, allowing citizens from both countries to send money across borders quickly. Binance Continues to Battle FUD as US Senators Go After Balance Sheets
Senators Elizabeth Warren, Chris Hollen, and Roger Marshall have requested financial and compliance documents from Binance executives, Changpeng Zhao and Brian Shroder. The senators have asked for documents related to the corporate structure and Know-Your-Customer policies of Binance, information on the relationships between the firm and its subsidiaries, and balance sheets for Binance and all subsidiaries dating back to 2017. The senators allege that Binance avoided U.S. regulatory oversight and that the firm facilitated the illicit flow of funds. In response to recent negative news, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao introduced a numerical code to ignore fearmongering or FUD. Today, Binance announced a new initiative to partner with law enforcement to combat scams. More information can be found here .

U.S. Treasury introduces CBDC working group, discusses potential routes for digital dollar
The US Department of Treasury has released comments from Undersecretary for Domestic Finance Nellie Liang on the potential implementation of a CBDC in the US. Liang confirmed the formation of a CBDC working group, which would consider the implications of a US CBDC for policy objectives for which a broader administration perspective is helpful. The remarks suggested that a CBDC could come on the backs of private entities, and a retail CBDC might involve a different architecture compared to a CBDC that is intended solely for wholesale use. The Treasury is also considering real-time payment systems as an alternative to a CBDC. More information can be found here .

FTX Reports Just $694M in Liquid Assets
FTX debtors have reported a "massive shortfall" of assets at both FTX.com and FTX.US, with just $694 million of the $2.2 billion of total assets at FTX.com being classified as "Category A Assets." Alameda Research had a net borrowing of $9.3 billion from wallets associated with FTX.com, while FTX.US had a net payable position of $107 million to Alameda. The debtors estimate that FTX.US has just $109 million in total assets against $335 million in customer claims and $283 million of related party claims payable. The presented information is still preliminary, and more facts are expected to be uncovered. More information can be found here .
Is a US CBDC Inevitable? In DC, Fight Brews Over Digital Dollar
The possibility of a US central bank digital currency (CBDC) is generating controversy, with critics concerned about the impact on financial privacy and civil rights. Republicans are particularly suspicious of the proposal, with Rep. Tom Emmer leading efforts to categorise a CBDC as part of a "surveillance state". Meanwhile, progressive groups are advocating for electronic cash systems instead, arguing that financial data has been disproportionately used by law enforcement and the national security apparatus to the detriment of low-income individuals and communities of colour. Despite the growing objections, a sense of inevitability around the creation of a US CBDC is building. More information can be found here .
Brave Search introduces the Summarizer, an AI tool for synthesized, relevant results
Brave Search has launched an AI summariser feature to provide concise answers at the top of search results pages. It utilises multiple sources of information present on the web and aggregates them to create a more accurate and coherent answer. The summariser is available for all users on desktop and mobile and will cite the provenance of original sources of data via links. The tool replaces query-dependent snippets with a summarised version of those snippets, and also highlights the answer. Brave Search processes daily peaks of 600 queries per second, and although a summary is generated for around 17% of queries, the company expects this to grow in the future as it scales its system.
