PayPal is temporarily stopping cryptocurrency purchases for its UK customers due to new regulations from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Existing crypto holders can still keep and sell their assets on the platform at no charge. The pause begins on Oct 1, 2023, with plans to resume crypto purchases in early 2024. This move follows PayPal's recent launch of the PayPal USD stablecoin and its emergence as a crypto-friendly platform. The FCA's new rules require crypto firms to fulfill additional steps before clients can buy cryptocurrency. Click here for more.

Open-source funding platform Gitcoin has sparked controversy by partnering with fossil fuel company Shell for a year-long collaboration. The partnership involves Shell donating $500,000 to Gitcoin's Grant Program and sponsoring a hackathon. While Gitcoin co-founder Kevin Owokci acknowledged the brand damage and backlash due to Shell's association with climate issues, he highlighted the importance of funding public goods projects. Critics, including Ethereum developers, raised concerns about greenwashing and perceived misalignment with ethical values. Gitcoin's executive director, Kyle Weiss, admitted mistakes in the partnership's execution and clarified that recipients could decline the funding. The debate underscores the challenge of funding open-source projects while maintaining ethical considerations. Click here for more.

Bitcoin-friendly El Salvador sees bond returns soar to 70% in 2023

No alt text provided for this image

El Salvador, which adopted Bitcoin as legal tender in 2021, has seen its dollar bond perform exceptionally well in 2023, delivering a 70% return. This impressive rally has attracted interest from institutional giants like JP Morgan, Eaton Vance, and PGIM Fixed Income, among others. The country's bonds are being viewed positively by investors, signaling support for El Salvador's financial policies. This success contrasts with initial doubts and criticism after the Bitcoin adoption. The country's ability to pay off an $800 million debt earlier this year and its passing of a crypto bill have boosted investor confidence in its bonds. Click here for more.

Uzbekistan's private banks, Kapital Bank and Ravnaq Bank, have gained approval from the National Agency for Perspective Projects (NAPP) to participate in the country's digital sandbox for crypto regulation. These banks will issue plastic crypto cards named UzNEX, integrated with a bank account, access to a crypto exchange, and an automated exchange mechanism. The cards will be powered by Mastercard. The deadline for customer rollouts of these crypto cards from both banks is set for the end of December 2023. These banks are among the three registered participants in Uzbekistan's national digital sandbox. The country's regulatory approach to crypto was initiated by a presidential decree in 2022 to oversee the digital assets industry. Click here for more.
