The Unbreakable Link Between Timekeeping, Integrity, and Trust in Business Negotiations

Since as long as I can remember, I've held timekeeping and word-keeping in the highest regard. Stemming from my upbringing in a military family and my early years in law enforcement, these qualities have been ingrained in me as non-negotiable. But why do I hold them so steadfastly? Why do I adamantly believe that engaging with individuals who struggle to keep their word or adhere to schedules should be avoided at all costs?

As I prepare to return to Zimbabwe after nearly two decades abroad, I've been actively seeking out professional connections on LinkedIn to align myself with like-minded individuals. While the platform has been instrumental in fostering these connections, I've encountered a disheartening trend – unreliability. Despite Zimbabwe's admirable strides in development, the lack of commitment displayed by some individuals is a stark reminder of why stringent adherence to one's word is paramount.

You see, I possess a cowboy mentality, rooted in the belief that a handshake, coupled with unwavering eye contact, should be as binding as any contract. Yet, I've come to acknowledge the necessity of legal agreements, albeit reluctantly. A man's word, bolstered by a firm handshake and maintained with unwavering eye contact, has been the cornerstone of my interactions. Conversely, promises such as "I will call you" or "Let's meet at such and such place at this time" hold little weight if not backed by action.

A breach of trust, whether in person or via social media, undermines the very foundation of any relationship. Trust is earned through consistent actions aligned with one's commitments. A failure to uphold promises not only erodes trust but also tarnishes one's reputation irreparably.

Entering into negotiations with individuals who lack integrity is akin to playing with fire. It's a gamble that often results in reputational damage and lost opportunities. Instead, I advocate for building connections with individuals who epitomize reliability and integrity. After all, in the realm of business and beyond, one's reputation is their most valuable asset.

If you aspire to be a trusted individual, give others a reason to place their faith in you. Communicate openly, honour your commitments, and demonstrate unwavering integrity. In doing so, you'll forge enduring relationships built on a foundation of trust – an invaluable currency in both business and life.

In conclusion, the value of timekeeping and word-keeping cannot be overstated. These qualities serve as the bedrock of integrity and trust in any negotiation or interaction. By aligning ourselves with individuals who share these values, we safeguard our reputations and pave the way for mutual success. Remember, in the world of business, integrity is non-negotiable.
