Unboxed healthcare roundup: Innovation and impact

At Unboxed , we’re passionate about transforming healthcare through thoughtful collaboration and innovative design. By working closely with clinicians, patients, and healthcare organisations, we’ve developed impactful solutions that address real world challenges. From rethinking hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) screening pathways to empowering patients with remote monitoring tools, our projects demonstrate the power of co-creation and user centred design in improving care.

In this newsletter, we’re excited to share highlights from our recent healthcare work, including insights into scaling digital health innovations, a look at SH:24’s award-winning service, and thought-provoking reflections on how nature can inspire healthcare design.

Together, let’s explore new ways to create better health outcomes for everyone.

Our work in digital health

Transforming screening for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

At Unboxed, we partnered with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB),?to rethink screening for this inherited cardiac condition. This work resulted in a proposed service pathway that brings screening closer to patients through community based care, making the process faster, simpler, and more accessible while enabling earlier intervention for at-risk individuals.

“I found the experience energising, as did several colleagues. We accomplished an enormous amount in a short space of time. I feel more confident talking about service design, which will put me in a stronger position to advocate for this approach in the future.” Dr William Bradlow, Cardiology Consultant, University Hospital Birmingham

Transforming patient care with remote monitoring

Unboxed worked with Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust , to design and develop a remote monitoring service for NHS patients with long term conditions.

Through user centred design, we’ve created a solution that makes it easy for patients to self-report symptoms from home, improves care between appointments, and streamlines clinical workflows.

Remote monitoring means consultants can track their patients’ symptoms and have more productive consultations. This builds on? existing, paper based systems of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).

We saw an opportunity to help patients self-report symptoms from home, making it easier for consultants to see when patients’ symptoms were changing. This could build on the existing, paper based system of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Event Spotlight: Roundtable Discussion

Early this month, Unboxed hosted a healthcare roundtable to explore the potential of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) with a diverse group of professionals. The session featured lightning talks from Melanie Martin (Guildford and Waverley Health and Care Alliance), Laura Smith (Unboxed designer), and Dr. Markus Gwiggner (University Hospital Southampton), followed by a dynamic Q&A.?

Key insights included the need for PROMs to drive service transformation rather than being mere add-ons, the importance of engaging clinicians by integrating PROMs with existing tools, and the potential for PROMs to empower patients, reduce reliance on resource heavy interventions, and ease healthcare navigation.?

Discussions emphasised balancing digital inclusion by freeing time for personalised care while addressing barriers faced by digitally excluded patients. Overall, PROMs were seen as a powerful tool for enabling patient choice, improving efficiency, and generating valuable data for both individual care and system-wide improvements.?

This session sparked thought provoking dialogue and will inform future roundtable discussions to be continued in 2026. Interested participants can contact us at Unboxed.

Digital health innovation: From pilot to scale

Scaling digital health solutions requires more than just great technology. It demands meaningful collaboration with the people who use and deliver these services. In our webinar earlier in the year, we explored how co-creation with clinicians and patients drives impactful innovation. From SH:24’s user centred approach to designing a pioneering digital sexual health service to the evolving role of clinician patient engagement, the session highlighted how listening deeply to stakeholders enables solutions that truly meet their needs.

Key insights included the importance of adaptability, like SH:24’s shift from SMS-based communication to user friendly online accounts, and the power of ongoing involvement to sustain innovation at scale. The discussion reinforced that co-creation isn’t just a method; it’s a mindset that ensures digital health tools are both effective and human centred.

?? What flowers can teach us about healthcare design

Unboxed designer Tom Gayler reflects on how nature’s exchanges, like flowers and bees, can reframe healthcare design. Healthcare often focuses on 'caring for' rather than 'caring with', creating hierarchical systems.

By designing for mutual exchanges and nurturing relationships, we can foster trust, empathy, and shared goals. Like gardening, understanding needs and creating the right conditions helps systems, and people, flourish. ??Read more for a fresh perspective on healthcare design.

Unboxed are proud to have worked on various healthcare projects, including an award winning online service that has transformed access to sexual health care, a beautifully simple remote monitoring service for patients with long-term conditions, and an investigation into the role of Design Thinking in keeping patients out of hospital when they could be better cared for at home.
