We all know the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover." Yet, when it comes to ourselves, we often do just that. We make assumptions and judgments based on what we do for a living. But is that really fair? Why do we define ourselves and others by our jobs?
One of the factors that fascinate me in human behaviour is the concept of self-identity. A self-generated perception of what we "believe." is right and wrong. We do it in many ways, but the two most essential things detrimental to our behaviour and, therefore, our environments are the idea of oneself in public and private.
Defining public and private self-identity
The public self is a representation of who we are in the eyes of others - how they know us, what they think of us and essentially how they define us.?
Unfortunately, these expectations, opinions and values shape this version of ourselves.
The private self, on the flip side, represents our true selves -? We know who we are, what we stand for, and our morals and desires. We are aware of what makes us feel like ourselves. This is what the actual self is.
Nevertheless, in our minds, we often have an image or projection of an individual we would like to or aspire to be. This is called the ideal self, and it is influenced by society and can also be shaped by upbringing, circumstances or culture.?
The true distinction of who you are lies between the pieces we share with the world versus those that reside in the depths of our being, where we know the authentic personality lives.
How our public and private selves are shaped by society
It is well-acknowledged that external perceptions tend to shape our public and private selves. We often feel pressure from society to present a certain persona when in public settings to fit in, leading us to act differently than we would have external pressures been absent.?
This is because of the external expectations placed on us by society, which can create an impactful limitation on our freedom of expression. Even in a working environment, external forces such as workplace culture and traditions can have a marked effect on how we conduct ourselves behind closed doors.?
Consequently, our public and private selves are not always indicative of true identity; rather, they can be drastically influenced by external pressures stemming from external sources such as the surrounding community.
Ways to nurture our private selves
To nurture our private selves, it begins with being able to identify our unique skills, strengths, and passions. Once we understand what sets us apart, then it is important to set goals that are within reach and allow us to develop those qualities further.?
Additionally, it is necessary to let go of the things in life that we cannot control or change and focus instead on all of the positive opportunities available. By embracing an optimistic outlook, we can move through life with creativity and hope while still honouring who we are at our core.
The importance of maintaining a healthy balance between our public and private selves
In today's world, it has become more important than ever to have and maintain a healthy balance between our public and private selves.?
This is not just about what we choose to share or not share on social media; authenticity combines with the ability to discover oneself, accept and embrace who we are, and find out more about what makes us unique as individuals.?
Establishing this kind of balance can give us an appreciation for our true identity, which enables us to live life more fully and joyfully - both inside and outside of our inner circle!
Why it's essential to work on yourself.
Investing in your own development is an important step in discovering meaning in life and reaching one's true potential.?
Through this training, you'll be able to develop a greater understanding of yourselves and your personal values; these insights create the building blocks for discovering newfound motivation and the drive to achieve greater heights.?
From an employment standpoint, self-development training can unlock career opportunities that may have previously been out of reach or unexplored due to a lack of awareness or confidence.
Conclusion?
Overall, it is clear that both the public and private aspects of our self-identity are incredibly important. It is essential to maintain a healthy balance between these two elements to effectively navigate through life and be true to our values and beliefs.?
That's why it is important to discover who you are as a whole first, understand your values and project what you want in your life. Discovering, accepting and embracing oneself is the key to success in life, no matter if it's a private or a public setting.??
I am on a mission to help people with their lives. Regardless of your role or phase in life, we all struggle to deal with our personal and professional life.?
