Mindfulness - Benefits And How To Practice Mindfulness

What is Mindfulness?

Being mindful means having awareness. It means to be consciously present at the moment.?

Dr. Dan Siegel, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry defines Mindfulness in three forms:

  1. Consciousness - Being intentional and conscious. This is basically the English translation
  2. Contemplative - It means to be present on purpose, tracking your experience without being judgmental
  3. Creative - It is where you enter a zone where you lose track of time when you are so focussed on work at hand. You enter this zone when you are doing something that you love.

Benefits of Mindfulness

There are a lot of benefits of mindfulness. It helps you be a lot happier in life.?

Dr. Hansaji Yogendra, Yoga Guru says in an interview: “Past will always bring tears to your eyes. Future will always bring fear in your eyes. Remain in present that will bring cheer in your life”

Being in the present moment helps us be aware.?

We will tend to be more productive. The quality of our work will increase to a greater level. When we work in a distracted environment, we really cannot produce quality work. When we work in a focussed mode, we tend to finish our work much earlier than when we do the same work in a distracted mode.?

Being mindful helps you think more clearly. As human beings we have a lot to see into. A lot of things need our attention. So it's easier for us to get distracted. Practicing mindfulness helps us stay on track and be aware of our thoughts.?

It helps us stay relaxed and to reduce stress. When we stay mindful of the present, we will start understanding that we feel stressed mostly because of thinking about something that happened in the past or about what will happen in future. Mindfulness helps you put your best in the present and that will help shape our future.

It helps you make better decisions in life.

Helps improve sleep.

Ultimately, you can start living a happier life.

How to practice mindfulness?

Sit with your thoughts

Really sit with your thoughts. Everyday set aside some 5 - 10 minutes to sit with your thoughts. Don’t judge. Don’t try to drive away any thought that occurs in your mind. Let all the thoughts flow through you. Practicing this clarifies your thoughts and helps you build mindfulness.

Journal

Another way to improve mindfulness is journaling. Journaling has a lot of benefits. One of its benefits is that it will help clear your mind and help you stay at the moment. You will have a better understanding of your feelings and emotions. It helps you be mindful of your emotions.?

Meditate

Make meditation a habit. Even if it’s just for two minutes, its compounded effect has a major positive effect on your life. It helps in improving the clarity of your thoughts and to be “at the moment”.

Form a habit

Mindfulness can not be practiced overnight. It is a skill that has to be practiced until it becomes a natural habit to you. Whatever you do, make sure your mind is there. Dr. Hansaji Yogendra says that mindfulness is when your mind, body, emotion and faith, everything is at the moment.
