UN warns of a severe global climate crisis in the new IPCC report. What can we do today and how can Israeli startups save the day?

A special team at UN has published a comprehensive report warning that "we're in the midst of the worst global crisis in human history."?Here's a brief summary of the findings and my take on it.

Overview:

The comprehensive report was produced by the IPCC led by 234 leading scientists from more than 60 countries who spent five years working on the report, which is based on the scientific work of tens of thousands of scientists around the world. The findings show that climate change is happening much faster than previously thought and that we are indeed in the midst of the most severe global crisis in human history. EVER!

According to the report, the frequency of extreme events such as heatwaves, floods and storms is expected to continue to increase rapidly. Recent events around the world which have taken a heavy toll on human lives, intellectual property and material assets underscore these findings. Fires and floods in Greece, Turkey, the United States and Australia, and this week in Israel are just some of the signs of the global climate crisis. It seems we are headed for a horror movie, only this time IT'S ABOUT BECOMING OUR REALITY!

The main problems:

According to the report, carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere are the highest they have been in 800,000 years, reaching 419 parts per million in May 2021.

Sea levels will also continue to rise for hundreds or even thousands of years, as heat has already accumulated in the depths of the oceans. It will continue to cause numerous floods in areas near the sea.

The difference of half a degree of global warming may seem small, but studies show that the difference between a rise of 1.5, 2 and 3 degrees Celsius is enormous.

According to the projections, the average duration of global drought will increase from two months to four months and even to ten months, which will directly affect the global food shortages and hunger in the world.

Why is it so critical to act now?

Although awareness of the problem has grown in recent years, too little has been done to prevent further global warming. This means that in 10-20 years we will all be suffering from greater heat and more extreme natural events that will threaten our well-being, our food reserves, and in turn, even world peace.

What needs to be done?

1. reduce greenhouse gas emissions - The countries of the world that have signed the document Climate Convention must hurry up with policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 emissions must fall by at least half by 2030, and by mid-century at the latest, the world must become carbon neutral through an accelerated transition to renewable energy.

2. ending deforestation - restoring these and other terrestrial ecosystems, including through a shift to ecological agriculture.

3. promoting plant-based and animal-free food production and technologies.

4. at the entrepreneurial/innovative level - it is time to encourage more start-ups ("top-down") that address all the problems. According to scientists, the optimistic message is that it's not too late, but everyone agrees that we need to act fast now, and who can act faster than tech start-ups? Israel, sunny and blessed with innovative talented individuals, can play a special role in the global effort to solve the climate crisis and in the technological transition to a low-carbon economy.

1. carbon climate and finding new solutions to reduce it and use it differently.

5. new and cheaper ways of producing energy - using the sea, the sun, and the wind in different and more cost-effective ways.

7. developing innovative vehicles or more environmentally friendly means of transportation.

8. new technologies and ways to protect and restore biological ecosystems to promote resilience in the global system, as healthy ecosystems are better able to withstand inevitable climate change (according to the data, we need to protect 30% of land and marine areas and reduce the overall impact on marine systems).

9. new ways of growing food - creating different species and seeds, increasing yields, growing in new areas that we have not been able to farm before.
