UN Sustainable Development Goal #2: Zero Hunger - Blackbird Global Seed Library in The Gambia

?In our world of abundance, it's shocking that hunger remains a persistent global challenge. The United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal #2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. As professionals and global citizens, we all have a role to play in this crucial mission.

The Scale of the Problem

Despite progress, the numbers are still staggering:

·?????? Nearly 690 million people are chronically undernourished

·?????? 144 million children under 5 are stunted due to malnutrition

·?????? 3 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet

The Gambia Overview

Food security in The Gambia is a critical issue, characterized by a combination of low agricultural productivity, climate-related challenges, and a heavy reliance on food imports. The agricultural sector, which employs nearly half of the workforce, primarily consists of smallholder subsistence farmers who depend on traditional rain-fed agriculture. This makes food production highly vulnerable to climate shocks such as droughts and floods, which are exacerbated by climate change. As a result, The Gambia produces only about 50% of its food needs, leading to significant food insecurity, with 27% of the population affected. High food prices, partly due to global factors like the war in Ukraine, further strain food accessibility. Additionally, malnutrition remains a significant concern, with high rates of stunting and wasting among children. Efforts to improve food security include increasing agricultural productivity through sustainable practices, enhancing market access for smallholder farmers, and strengthening social protection programs to support vulnerable populations.

The seed library initiative in The Gambia, spearheaded by the Blackbird Global Foundation, is a significant contributor to achieving UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) #2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. The seed library project is designed to provide nearly 400 communities in the Upper River Region with a diverse collection of seeds that are well-suited to the local climate. This initiative not only aims to increase food production and availability but also empowers local women by involving them in the management and operation of the seed libraries. By fostering a community of experienced and novice gardeners, the project builds local capacity and resilience against food insecurity. Moreover, the seed libraries help address the challenges posed by climate change, such as erratic rainfall and droughts, by promoting the cultivation of climate-resilient crops. This approach supports sustainable agricultural practices and enhances the overall food security of the region, contributing directly to the objectives of SDG #2.

Key Targets of SDG 2

1. End hunger and malnutrition: Ensure all people, especially children, have access to sufficient nutritious food year-round.

2. Double agricultural productivity: Focus on small-scale food producers, particularly women and indigenous peoples.

3. Ensure sustainable food production systems: Implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity while maintaining ecosystems.

4. Maintain genetic diversity: Preserve seeds, cultivated plants, and farmed animals through properly managed seed banks.

Innovative Local Solutions: Blackbird Global Foundation's Seed Library

An inspiring example of local action addressing SDG 2 is the Blackbird Global Foundation's initiative to establish a seed library in the Upper River Region (URR) of The Gambia. This project directly contributes to several key targets of SDG 2:

·?????? Preserving genetic diversity: The seed library will maintain a collection of local and indigenous seed varieties, contributing to the preservation of plant genetic resources crucial for food security.

·?????? Enhancing agricultural productivity: By providing farmers access to a diverse range of seeds, the library supports the adoption of resilient agricultural practices and potentially increases crop yields.

·?????? Promoting sustainable agriculture: The seed library encourages the use of locally-adapted varieties, which often require fewer inputs and are more resistant to local pests and diseases.

·?????? Improving food security: By safeguarding seed diversity and improving access to quality seeds, the project contributes to long-term food security in the region.

How We Can Contribute

As professionals, we can make a difference:

1. Advocate: Raise awareness about food insecurity and innovative solutions like seed libraries in your networks.

2. Innovate: Develop technologies or business models that improve food production and distribution.

3. Invest: Support companies and initiatives focused on sustainable agriculture and nutrition.

4. Volunteer: Contribute time or expertise to local food banks or global organizations fighting hunger.

5. Support the work of Blackbird Global through donations of funds or goods.

6. Reduce waste: Implement practices in your workplace and home to minimize food waste.

?The Path Forward

Achieving Zero Hunger is not just a moral imperative; it's essential for sustainable global development. The Blackbird Global Foundation's seed library project in The Gambia demonstrates how local, targeted initiatives can contribute significantly to global goals.

Let's commit to taking action, no matter how small, towards this vital goal. What steps will you take to contribute to SDG 2? Could you support or replicate innovative projects like seed libraries in your own community?

@The Gambia River is the most navigable river in West Africa and is flanked by fertile plains from its mouth to near its source in the Futa Jalon mountains of Guinea-Conakry. Establishing an organic seed bank in this region would serve as a crucial resource for sustainable agricultural practices and ensure a stable food chain throughout West Africa.
