Achieving Good Health and Well-Being: The Importance of UN Sustainable Development Goal 3

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3) is about?ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all people of all ages. Health is a fundamental aspect of human development, and SDG 3 addresses some of the most critical challenges that impact global well-being. It aims to reduce mortality rates, fight epidemics, and promote health equity worldwide.

Key Targets of SDG 3:

  • Reduce maternal and child mortality: Significant progress has been made, but maternal mortality remains high in certain regions, particularly in developing countries. SDG 3 aims to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births and end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age.
  • End epidemics: Tackling diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and hepatitis is a key focus. SDG 3 seeks to end the epidemics of these communicable diseases by increasing prevention, treatment, and access to healthcare services.
  • Ensure universal health coverage: SDG 3 emphasises the need for universal health coverage (UHC), ensuring everyone can access essential health services without financial hardship. This includes access to affordable medicines, vaccines, and treatments.
  • Combat non-communicable diseases: With rising rates of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), SDG 3 aims to reduce premature mortality from NCDs through prevention, treatment, and promoting mental health and well-being.
  • Promote mental health: Mental health remains one of the most underfunded sectors globally, yet it's crucial for holistic well-being. SDG 3 advocates for more investment in mental health services and policies to support those affected by mental health disorders.

The Importance of SDG 3:

Without good health, people cannot fully engage in education, work, or community activities. Achieving SDG 3 will boost productivity, reduce inequality, and promote prosperity for individuals and communities. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of resilient health systems capable of withstanding crises, making the goals under SDG 3 even more urgent.

Challenges Ahead:

Despite progress, significant challenges remain. Disparities in healthcare access between high- and low-income countries persist, and billions still lack access to basic health services. Environmental factors like pollution and climate change further threaten public health. Global efforts, therefore, must be intensified to meet the 2030 targets of SDG 3.

What Can You Do?

We can all contribute to better health and well-being in our communities by supporting initiatives that promote healthy living, raising awareness about preventable diseases, advocating for mental health resources, and encouraging governments to prioritise health in their policy agendas.

SDG 3 is about ensuring that everyone, everywhere, has the opportunity to live a healthy and fulfilling life, and achieving it requires collective action from all sectors of society.
