Umbria: A Beautiful Castle Will Become a Luxury Hotel

Fairytales are not always imaginary. Such is the case of an exquisite 12th century castle known as Castello di Antognolla located in the Italian region of Umbria. The castle’s site was once a 10th –century Benedictine monastery and crypt. Set amongst lush rolling green hills, olive groves, intimidating cypress trees, and vineyards, the estate will be converted into a five-star hotel by the luxury hotel group Six Senses. This will be their second venture into Italy (the first is in Rome as mentioned recently on our blog). The property will house a Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed 18-hole golf course, an equestrian center, a cooking school, an organic farm, an Experience Pavilion (for classes, tastings and workshops with emphasis on food and wine) and a more contemporary wing will be added for a spa and wellness center offering programs in sleep health, nutrition, movement and more.

Known as Six Senses Antognolla, the hotel will debut in 2023 and will span across 1,335 acres. Besides a variety of hotel accommodations, there will also be residences for sale including villas and farmhouses.

Six Senses Antognolla will be located about (1 hour, 45 minutes from Florence) and (2 hours, 15 minutes from Rome).

However, you don’t need to wait until 2023 to enjoy Umbria and the flavors of Italy. With plenty of its own allure, there’s a strong food and wine scene here – particularly in Norcia, which boasts itself as the home of truffles, hams and cheeses. Orvieto offers fine wines and one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy. Assisi is home to the Basilica di San Francesco which has frescoes by Giotto. Perugia has a fine example of gothic architecture such as Palazzo dei Priori dating back between the 13th and 14th centuries.
