Earlier this year, I thought of a way to share an ultimate problem-solving guide with entrepreneurs and career professionals. The new year means a lot to many, but it does not take away the fact that there will also be new challenges due to both external and internal factors. New problems often present new opportunities for growth and innovation; however, there are times when these problems are simply bottlenecks and should be avoided, and there are other times when you should be well prepared to face some challenges so you can solve them faster.
In this article, I will be sharing an easy, simple, yet succinct guide on how to preempt, prepare for, and solve any business challenge in 2024.
Needless to say, you may be familiar already with the six core steps of problem-solving - Identify and define the problem, consider possible solutions, evaluate options, choose the best solution, implement, and evaluate the outcome.
These core steps are still relevant today in problem-solving. However, I wouldn’t bore you with these; instead, I want to share practical tips that will help you see ahead, plan ahead, and deal with any challenge head-on. As you will find out, these are very simple techniques; however, they are mostly overlooked.
New Year, New Challenges.
Challenges are alright. They could be good or bad. Nonetheless, you have to know that there will be challenges. As a business owner, one of the reasons you should conduct a SWOT analysis of your business is to have a glimpse of the sort of challenges you may face and be prepared to tackle them.
A SWOT analysis is a tool that helps you identify your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. By doing a SWOT analysis, you can better understand your current situation, your competitive advantage, your potential areas for improvement, and your external risks and challenges.
For example, a SWOT analysis for a small online clothing store in 2024 could look something like this:
By doing a SWOT analysis, you can anticipate some of the challenges you may face in 2024, such as how to deal with increased competition, adapt to changing customer demands, and protect your online assets. You can also identify some of the opportunities you can pursue, such as how to reach new customers, collaborate with others, and leverage technology and data.
Preparation is underrated.
If you intend to underrate anything in 2024, do not let preparation and proper planning be one of them. Plan and prepare. Highlight your goals, divide them into simple steps, pre-empt outcomes and events. All these and more are part of proper planning.
Planning and preparation are essential for effective problem-solving. Without a clear plan and realistic preparation, you may end up wasting time, money, and resources, or worse, making the problem more significant and more complex.
To plan and prepare for problem-solving, you should follow these steps:
- Define your goals and objectives. What are you trying to achieve? What are the desired outcomes and results? How will you measure your success?
- Break down your goals into manageable tasks and actions. What are the steps you need to take to reach your goals? What are the resources and tools you need? Who are the people you need to involve or consult?
- Assign roles and responsibilities. Who will do what, when, and how? How will you communicate and coordinate with each other? How will you monitor and report your progress and performance?
- Anticipate potential obstacles and risks. What are the possible challenges and difficulties you may encounter along the way? How will you prevent or mitigate them? How will you handle contingencies and emergencies?
For example, if your goal is to increase your sales by 20% in the first quarter of 2024, you could plan and prepare something like this:
By planning and preparing for problem-solving, you can increase your chances of success, efficiency, and satisfaction.

Ask questions.
One of the most powerful and simple techniques for problem-solving is asking questions. Asking questions can help you clarify and understand the problem, generate and evaluate solutions, and learn and improve from the results.
Asking questions can also help you challenge your assumptions, uncover hidden information, and discover new perspectives and insights.
To ask effective questions for problem-solving, you should follow these tips:
- Ask open-ended questions. Open-ended questions are questions that require more than a yes or no answer. They encourage deeper and broader responses and discussions. For example, instead of asking “Do you like our product?â€, you could ask “What do you like or dislike about our product?†or “How does our product meet your needs or expectations?â€
- Ask probing questions. Probing questions are questions that follow up on a previous answer or statement. They help you dig deeper and explore the underlying reasons, causes, or implications of something. For example, if someone says “Our sales are decliningâ€, you could ask “Why do you think our sales are declining?†or “What are the consequences of our sales declining?â€
- Ask clarifying questions. Clarifying questions are questions that help you confirm or verify something. They help you avoid misunderstandings or confusion and ensure that you and others are on the same page. For example, if someone says “We need to improve our customer serviceâ€, you could ask “What do you mean by improving our customer service?†or “How will we know if we have improved our customer service?â€
By asking questions for problem-solving, you can enhance your critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills.
The role of money in problem-solving.
Money is often a key factor in problem-solving. You can throw money at most problems, but not all. Some problems will cost you more money than others. Some problems are even financially related. Money can be both a solution and a problem for problem-solving. On one hand, money can help you solve problems by enabling you to access or acquire the resources, tools, or people you need. On the other hand, money can create problems by limiting your options, increasing your costs, or causing conflicts or disputes.
To use money effectively for problem-solving, you should follow these tips:
- Budget and prioritize. How much money do you have or need for problem-solving? How will you allocate or distribute your money among different tasks or activities? What are the most important or urgent things you need to spend money on?
- Compare and contrast. How much money will each potential solution cost or save you? How will you measure the return on investment or the cost-benefit analysis of each solution? What are the trade-offs or opportunity costs of each solution?
- Negotiate and collaborate. How will you obtain or secure the money you need for problem-solving? How will you communicate or justify your financial needs or requests to others? How will you cooperate or partner with others who have or share the money you need?
You can optimize your outcomes, efficiency, and satisfaction by using money wisely for problem-solving.
Build a problem-solving organization.
Problem-solving is not only an individual skill but also an organizational capability. As a business owner, you should aim to build a culture that encourages and rewards problem-solving at all levels of your company. Here are some steps you can take to foster a problem-solving organization.
- Define the problem clearly and objectively. Avoid blaming or judging people, and focus on finding the root cause of the issue.
- Brainstorm multiple solutions and alternatives. Involve your team members and stakeholders in generating and evaluating ideas. Use data and evidence to support your decisions.
- Implement and monitor the chosen solution. Communicate the action plan clearly and assign roles and responsibilities. Track the progress and outcomes of the solution and make adjustments as needed.
- Learn from the experience and celebrate the success. Reflect on what worked and what didn’t, and share the lessons learned with your organization. Recognize and reward the efforts and achievements of your problem-solvers.
