A team retreat is a great way for members to bond, learn from one another, and get inspired about what they can accomplish in the next year. While organizing a retreat may seem like a difficult task, it does not have to be difficult if you plan ahead and keep your team as the main priority.

Team retreats are a fantastic way for senior executives or departments in your business to get together to set objectives, encourage innovation, and improve morale. It's important for certain companies, including those with remote employees, to send the entire workforce on a retreat.

One very important decision that will need to be made is the decision of experience – how you want team members and participants to feel during and after the retreat. More importantly, you also want to make a decision about the desired benefit you want to retreat to bring to the organization.

Some questions to help you in this regard include:

  • What kind of learning opportunities do you hope to provide for your team members?

Make the retreat's logistics a priority.

One of the worst things that can happen is to get to the retreat venue only to find that all the handouts or other needed materials are not on hand. ?Key logistical considerations should be:

  • What is the retreat's budget?
  • ?Is there a single budget for the entire team or individual budgets for each team member? ?How many members of the team are going?
  • ?When will the retreat end?
  • What options are there for food and transportation?
  • ?Is there a daily session plan?
  • Do you have a checklist for each session or activity?
  • Are there first aid responders amongst the team?

Make sure to plan for everything if you want to truly create an experience that your team members will remember. Make plans for your travel, meals, lodging, activities, and other necessities. Make sure you have a budget big enough to cover all of these things and more. Don't forget to account for space for a team portrait, presenters from the team, and any other special guests.

Large-scale or corporate retreats at the beach locations are typically shorter. My retreats typically last two – three days. Many businesses decide to keep their offsites for full-team retreats to three to five days. It truly depends on what you hope to do at the retreat and how much you want to get done.
