2024 has offered many in-person events. They've brought great chances, new relationships, and some awkward, anxiety-filled moments! For anyone else dipping their toes into in-person events, here are my tips for success!
Guide to Conference Networking
1. Set clear goals.
Before you even step foot into the conference, define your objectives. It's about making new contacts and learning from industry leaders. It's also about finding potential collaborators. Having clear goals will guide your interactions and make your time productive. Ask yourself: if you had a magic wand, what would be the best result of attending this conference? ?
2. Do your homework.
Study the sessions, speakers, and attendees in advance. Familiarize yourself with the event’s theme, key speakers, and workshops. This prep will help you've had good talks. It will show your real interest in the topics.
3. Download networking apps.
Most conferences have dedicated apps that list attendees, sessions, and networking opportunities. Use these apps to schedule coffee chats and meet-and-greets ahead of time. This proactive approach ensures you maximize your time and helps fast-track conversations.
4. Save your LinkedIn QR code as your lock screen.
Make it easy for new connections to find you on LinkedIn. Save your LinkedIn QR code as your phone’s lock screen. This quick access will make it easier to connect with others digitally. You can do it on the spot.
5. Be Genuine
Authenticity is key in building valuable relationships. Show a genuine interest in others by asking thoughtful questions and listening. People appreciate it when you take the time to understand their work and experiences.
6. Craft an elevator pitch.
Have a clear and concise summary of what you do and what you’re looking for. Make it unique and easy to understand. Simplicity is best when explaining your professional background and goals.
7. Stay present and curious.
Avoid distractions and remain engaged in conversations. Your undivided attention shows respect and helps in forming stronger connections. It's essential to show interest in others, and you'll be memorable.
8. Dress for success.
Wear what you are comfortable in, especially shoes, with a focus on professionalism. Add any bits of flair that align with your brand. Below is Michael Glenn , the ERE editor who put together an incredible event last week in Austin, TX.
Join us this fall for the next ERE Conference: Event Date: November 12-14, 2024
Location: The Westin Anaheim Resort, 1030 West Katella Avenue, Anaheim, CA
9. Share content about the event and speakers.
When we highlight and celebrate others, we've helped amplify the event for the future. We also celebrate the expertise of the speakers. Snap a picture of the event organizer or keynote speaker. Then, create a free piece of content and share it with your community. Be sure to share your perspective and why you're sharing.
10. Stay safe and hydrate.
For conferences, many travel alone. So, it's key to research the facility and event beforehand. It's smart to connect with people you know. Plan meet-ups for coffee, breakfasts, or sessions, etc. Keep your phone charged. Have chargers or battery packs. That way, if you need directions, an Uber, or to talk to conference buddies you can. Watch your alcohol consumption, keep your drink in hand, and stick with people whom you feel safe. Throughout the day, drink water. You will be talking more than usual. So, fill your water bottles and use those water breaks.
10. Journal your experiences.
At the end of each day, take time to journal about your experiences. Note key people you met, interesting conversations, and any follow-up actions. This reflection will help you remember key details. It's also going to help you plan your follow-up strategy.

11. Send video and audio messages.
Stand out by sending personalized video or audio messages. Use them to follow up with new connections after the event. These messages add a personal touch. They're more memorable than standard text follow-ups. It'll help you make deeper connections and friendships. These will likely benefit you later.
12. Send mailed cards or photos.
For key connections you want to stay top of mind with, consider sending a physical card or photo. Snap a great picture at the conference, print it, and send it as a card using the Felt App. This thoughtful gesture can make a lasting impression.
13. Connect with local connections.
Whether they are at the conference, it's always a good idea to look at your connections in the city you are going to. See who you could meet up with in person. I was lucky enough to meet up with one of my original coaching clients from 4 years ago the amazing Alma Maria R. !!
