The Ultimate Guide to Competitor Analysis: Find Hidden Opportunities and Crush the Competition as a Solopreneur

The Ultimate Guide to Competitor Analysis: Find Hidden Opportunities and Crush the Competition as a Solopreneur

When I entered the field of sales 11 years ago, working for a telecommunications company, navigating the market to sell customers on a network package posed significant challenges.

In Nigeria, where the average person already owned multiple SIM cards, convincing anyone to sign up was a tough sell. Dual SIM phones had already addressed the issue of carrying multiple SIM cards, and most people had their slots filled due to the unreliability of network service providers, rendering it essentially a commodity.

Working on a commission basis, I found myself in a "kill what you eat" scenario. I was broke, had to trek long distances to work, and motivation was a distant concern.

Hustle became the name of the game. Heading into the field under the scorching sun, I was responsible for meeting quotas, arranging my own meals, and ensuring I had transportation back to the drop-off point before COB.

Missing the return spot meant being left behind. Despite the challenges, I had to report back to the office for debriefing and information upload before heading home late at night.

As an introvert, I persevered outside my comfort zone, learning on the job. Morning training sessions were often missed due to the arduous trek, compounded by rising insecurity in the small town I called home, with kidnapping cases on the rise which meant leaving home before 7 am a challenge.

Self-taught in the art of selling, I delved into studying current packages and competitors' offers to hit my quota of 150 activated SIM cards. The market leader's stronger network coverage made their offer easier to sell.

To distinguish myself, I identified emotional selling points rather than relying on generic bonuses. This strategy not only helped me effortlessly reach my quota but also earned me promotions faster than my peers.

If you've read up to this point here are the lesson that has stayed with me up to this point even in my solopreneurship journey as a remote sales consultant and throughout my life career in sales.
