The Ultimate Competitive Edge You Need to Know

In Sydney, Australia, during the early 2000s, a group of friends found themselves frustrated with the way software development was being managed. Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, two university buddies, were fresh out of college and had started working in the tech industry. They saw first-hand the struggles that teams faced in collaborating effectively, tracking projects, and communicating seamlessly. This sparked an idea that would soon revolutionise the way teams worked together.
It was during a particularly long and chaotic meeting that the pivotal moment occurred. The room was filled with tired faces, eyes glazed over from hours of discussing project timelines, tasks, and bugs. As they delved deeper into the idea, they realised that there was a glaring gap in the market.
While there were project management tools available, none seemed to address the fundamental issue of fostering collaboration and transparency within teams. They saw an opportunity to create something that not only helped teams manage their work but also enabled them to work better together.
And so,?Atlassian was born with a clear mission in mind: to unleash the potential of every team. Atlassian is not only focused on providing collaboration tools for external teams; they also prioritised collaboration within their own company culture.
They analyse team structures, cross functional projects, feedback processes and distributed decision making in order to consistently maintain their focus on collaborative teamwork.
Leveraging the strength and ultimate abilities of your teams can be the difference to the rate of your businesses success and growth.
Often we spend so much time and effort attracting great talent but getting the talent in the door is just the start. You need ideal conditions for them to thrive, stay challenged and contribute in a way that is meaningful for them and beneficial to the business.
The consequences of ineffective teamwork for leaders and business owners includes declining employee morale and productivity to increased costs and sluggish decision-making processes.
Plans for strategic growth become drawn out due to lack of coordination and duplication of efforts waste valuable resources. Opportunities are missed due to limited information sharing, and customer experiences marred by disjointed service delivery.
Does any of this sound familiar?
If you've ever felt the weight of these challenges on your shoulders, you're not alone. Countless businesses grapple with the repercussions of fragmented communication and isolated workflows, hindering their potential for growth and success.
The numbers stack up
A report by Harvard Business Review Analytic Services, sponsored by Dropbox, revealed that 97% of employees and executives believe lack of alignment within a team impacts the outcome of a task or project.
PwC's annual CEO Survey reports 85% of CEOs are concerned about the lack of collaboration within their organisations.
Gunning for a new role or promotion?
The Deloitte Global Human Capital Trends report found that 79% of executives rated collaboration and teamwork as "important" or "very important", making it one of the top skills sought after in potential hires.
In the ever-evolving landscape of modern business, one thing remains constant: the undeniable power and need for effective team collaboration.
It's not just a buzzword—it's a strategic necessity that can transform businesses from surviving to thriving.
The Gap
If leaders are aware of the need for collaboration, why does the gap seem so large? The challenge lies in the inherent complexities of fostering effective collaboration within organisations.
Leadership behaviours, often moulded by traditional hierarchical structures, can inadvertently reinforce silos by focusing on individual team achievements rather than cross-functional cooperation.
Organisational structures, designed to streamline operations and allocate responsibilities, naturally segment teams into areas of specialisation, expertise, and job roles. While these structures are essential for efficiency, they can create barriers to communication, hinder knowledge sharing, and impede the flow of ideas across departments.
Additionally, a lack of clear communication channels, conflicting priorities, and the fear of stepping outside established boundaries can further exacerbate the divide.
Thus, the task of breaking down silos and promoting a culture of collaboration requires intentional effort, collaborative styles of leadership, and a shift towards fostering a shared sense of purpose and collective success across all levels of the organisation."
The Impact of Effective Team Collaboration
In many of my employee experience research projects I start with reading through previous people pulse surveys. It’s never too long until you find comments such as “I’d like to understand how other teams in the business operate and what they do” or “we’d like a more collaborative approach” or “I’d like the to opportunity to connect with more people outside my team”.
Most employees want to work in an organisation with more collaborative approaches. Yet, solutions to this feedback often comes in what I call an ‘over and above’ strategy. We create new initiatives over and above what we’re already doing. A team day, a lunch, a brunch. Only to find the effort lags overtime as time restraints choke the lifeblood out of opportunities for connection.
Instead, the better option is to examine our ways of working every day. Ways of collaborating around the work that we’re already doing. Changing our meeting structures, adapting collaborative leadership styles and changing things up ever so slightly.
According to a Deloitte report, The Collaborative Economy companies with high levels of collaboration are twice as likely to be profitable compared to those with low collaboration levels. Not a typo…. Twice as likely!
These statistics paint a clear picture: effective team collaboration isn't just a nice-to-have—it's a game-changer.
Global Success Story: Pixar Animation Studios, is a global success story renowned for their collaborative team approaches. Creator of beloved animated films like "Toy Story," "Finding Nemo," and "Coco," quickly became a market stand out and it all came down to their processes.
Pixar's creative process is deeply rooted in collaboration, with teams of artists, writers, animators, and directors coming together to bring stories to life. The studio's "Braintrust" meetings, where key creatives openly critique and refine each other's work, have become legendary in the industry.
This commitment to embedding effective collaboration has resulted in a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films. Pixar's ability to harness the collective creativity and expertise of its teams has not only led to box office triumphs but also to a reputation for ground-breaking storytelling and technical innovation.
Benefits
Here’s a quick summary of the benefits that result from adapting collaborative practices. ?
1. Accelerated Growth
Research from Harvard Business Review suggests that collaborative leaders inspire innovation, improve employee engagement, and drive business growth.
By embracing collaborative leadership, businesses can break down silos, encourage knowledge sharing, and promote a sense of ownership among team members.
This approach leads to faster decision-making, better problem-solving, and ultimately, improved business agility.
2. Enhanced Customer Experience
Your business is defined by the experiences you deliver. Effective team collaboration plays a pivotal role in creating seamless, exceptional customer experiences.
According to a study by Stanford, companies that prioritise collaboration across departments are 64% more likely to deliver a positive customer experience.
When teams work together cohesively, they can align their efforts to understand customer needs, anticipate trends, and deliver products or services that exceed expectations.
This results in increased customer loyalty, positive brand perception, and ultimately, higher revenue.
3. Elevated Employee Experience
A stable workforce is the backbone of any successful business. With high turnover comes disruption to service delivery, slower revenue and increased stress on those left within and running the business.
By fostering a collaborative environment, business owners can boost employee satisfaction, reduce turnover rates, and attract top talent. This not only enhances the overall work culture but also translates into improved business performance and competitiveness.
Research from Google's Project Aristotle revealed a key component of effective collaboration, and the top requirement for a high-performing teams. That factor is an organisation ability to have employees feel seen and heard in what was coined ‘equal voice’. When team members feel that they are contributing and able to communicate openly, they will be more engaged, productive, and loyal.
Think about how your last meeting ran. How many people spoke? Were the voices in the room equal? If not, why not? How could you change it?
