Here are the six key pointers to set you on the path to becoming a successful digital nomad!

#1 Become an Expert

It appears straightforward that many individuals consider themselves experts in the services they provide as Nomads. However, determining the threshold to label oneself an expert in a specific field or industry isn't so clear-cut. While there isn't a definitive scale for measurement, here are some pointers to help gauge and foster expertise in any chosen field.

  • Master best practices in your field by integrating them consistently into your work. Case studies and a strong track record boost your expertise.
  • Certifications serve as benchmarks, validating your knowledge and often attracting recruiters and clients.
  • Translate your expertise into accessible content like blogs or vlogs to help others and reinforce your own understanding.
  • Develop a robust digital presence, especially on platforms like LinkedIn, to showcase expertise and connect with clients, recruiters, and peers in your industry.

Invest in a solid workspace, with that I mean having solid machine and devices that maximize and make your entire work process seamless and reliable. This will cost you a pretty penny out the gate but rest assure the ROI is worth it.

I have kept that my hardware platform pretty simple, being all apple and Yes I am fan boy and cult follower but let me say it has delivered.

Here is a basic setup:

  • MacBook Pro: Simple, reliable, and secure straight out of the box.
  • iPhone: Mini Wi-Fi on the go; avoid relying on café Wi-Fi or connections from strangers.
  • Headphones: Invest in noise-cancelling ones to block out airport bustle and create an office-like environment

#6 Mindset Change

Transitioning out of the typical 9-5 environment means giving up the safety net of a steady and consistent monthly income. In a corporate job, there are instances where providing 60-70% effort still results in the same revenue. However, in the gig economy, although there's potentially 5 times the earning potential, lower effort directly impacts cash flow. It's essential to prepare mentally for relinquishing access to health insurance, pension plans, sick leaves, and vacations. If this sounds daunting, it's crucial to consider these factors before making the leap. While the checklist from 1-5 can help mitigate these challenges, they persist regardless.
