On Ukraine: Why not degrade GLONASS?
ON UKRAINE: WHY NOT DEGRADE GLONASS?
OSHKOSH, WI – February 27, 2022 – So here’s a question dear DoD friends: Why not diminish the ability of Russia to target missiles, by hacking and degrading Russia’s answer to GPS, GLONASS? See Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GLONASS
According to Wikipedia: “GLONASS (Russian: ГЛОНАСС, IPA: [ɡ???nas]; Глобальная навигационная спутниковая система, Global Navigation Satellite System) is a Russian space-based satellite navigation system operating as part of a radionavigation-satellite service. It provides an alternative to GPS and is the second navigational system in operation with global coverage and of comparable precision."
On Nov 15, 2021 Russia destroyed one of its own satellites in space, creating a debris field that threatened the ISS. See YouTube video here (includes footage of other space-related stories).
"Manufacturers of satellite navigation devices say that adding GLONASS made more satellites available to them, meaning positions can be fixed more quickly and accurately, especially in built-up areas where buildings may obscure the view to some GPS satellites. GLONASS supplementation of GPS systems also improves positioning in high latitudes (north or south). Development of GLONASS began in the Soviet Union in 1976.”
It would be infinitely more difficult for Russia to place missiles precisely on military and civilian targets, without the precision nav provided by GLONASS. Without GLONASS, they’d have to find old geezers with slide rules to calculate firing solutions. All of the sudden Comrade Putin would be shooting himself in the foot, even more than he is already.
