UKGBC's Top Five
UK Green Building Council (UKGBC)
Together for a better built environment
Welcome to UKGBC's Top Five, our monthly roundup that brings you the latest highlights from across our sustainable built environment.
In this January edition, we look back at our latest report launched last year at COP28 in Dubai, which examines the built environment's progress in reaching our net zero goals and highlights areas that are falling behind on our decarbonisation pathway. We also lookahead to a myriad of exciting projects and events coming up in 2024 and outline how our members can get involved to support the transformation of our industry.

UKGBC's recently published report reveals the built environment industry is significantly off-track from the trajectory required to meet the UK’s national net zero commitments.??
This analysis – a progress report updating data related to UKGBC’s Net Zero Whole Life Carbon Roadmap – reveals that between 2018 and 2022, carbon emissions from the UK built environment fell by 13%, significantly less than the 19% required to meet the UK’s net zero pathway. The new report also examines areas of the industry where faster progress is needed and assesses the impact of the pandemic on decarbonisation.?
Last year on Skills and Education Day at COP28, UKGBC outlined its vision of a built environment industry in which all stakeholders are equipped with the skills and knowledge to deliver climate action. To enable our industry to get on the front foot of the green transition, we have a range of open sustainability learning and leadership programmes scheduled for Winter 23-24. ?
For organisations seeking sustainability training tailored to their individual needs and objectives, UKGBC offers bespoke learning in a range of formats and styles. See this page for more information or contact [email protected].?
Energy required to heat, power and operate commercial buildings accounts for nearly a quarter of the built environment’s carbon footprint in the UK. Significant improvements in energy efficiency must be accelerated across all sectors to achieve net zero.?
This January, UKGBC is launching new guidance exploring the potential cost and carbon impacts of different retrofit measures, and how to retrofit our existing offices towards net zero.
