The Lords have listened to the collective voice of our coalition of more than 100 UK businesses that, earlier this year, called for reforms to England’s planning system in a joint letter. This week, the Lords voted to align our planning system with our climate and nature goals. This is a huge step forward that would end years of frustration, delay, and climate damage.

Now, we urge the Government to recognise the breadth and depth of support from across the UK’s economy and society by ensuring that this amendment becomes law so that we can get on with the business of delivering homes, places and spaces fit for a net zero carbon future in which people and nature can thrive. This success is only possible thanks to our dedicated members, who worked with us to deliver this message to Government.

Our climate is changing, rapidly and dangerously. The UK is experiencing more intense and frequent extreme weather events caused by hotter, driers summers and wetter, windier winters. These changes to our climate have huge consequences for the UK’s homes, buildings, communities, places and spaces. Our built environment needs to adapt, now.

To enable our industry to take action and meet the challenge, UKGBC is hosting a series of events and learning opportunities:

Fully decarbonising the electricity system by 2035 is central to delivering Net Zero in the UK. With buildings responsible for over 60% of the UK’s national electricity demand, the built environment industry has a critical role to play in achieving this target.

Last week, UKGBC published new guidance that empowers stakeholders tasked with procuring energy in the built environment to do so in a way that enables them to realise their climate ambition, while supporting the continued decarbonisation of the electricity supply sector. Across a suite of guidance documents, UKGBC’s new series of reports gives industry the tools to make more informed procurement decisions. Download the guidance here.

We need a radical transformation of the systems we operate within to meet our targets and avert climate and nature breakdown. We must challenge our assumptions and ‘business as usual’ way of working to enable a dramatic paradigm shift that reconciles humans and the rest of nature.

To support this transformation, UKGBC is calling on stakeholders across the built environment to engage in a new Systems Change programme that seeks to address the root causes of the complex problems we face to create long-term sustainable solutions. We invite all built environment professionals to join us to learn more about our Systems Change programme at the kick-off webinar on 27th September. Sign up here.

Ahead of the introduction of BNG legislation in November, UKGBC’s has launched a new addition to the BNG series which outlines how and why biodiversity and nature matters to the built environment.

The infographics examine the intrinsic value of nature while demonstrating the impact of the built environment as an industry on the UK’s biodiversity. They also map the links between biodiversity and other socio-economic priorities to tell a broader story about how we should view nature as a foundational element of our economy and society. Access the infographics here.
