UKCEH hosts Swedish workshop to demonstrate SCAIL Sweden tool
UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH)
Environmental science for a better world, where people and nature prosper
Scientists from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) were in Sweden recently to demonstrate the functionality of the new SCAIL Sweden tool during a workshop with Swedish county agency staff. Tailored to meet Sweden's specific environmental challenges, the tool builds on the UK’s SCAIL (Simple Calculation of Atmospheric Impact Limits) framework.
Staff from multiple Swedish county agencies will use SCAIL Sweden to assess both new and existing combustion and agricultural sources. The tool will play a key role in evaluating the pollution impacts of these activities on sensitive natural areas such as Natura 2000 sites, a network of protected areas established to safeguard Europe’s most valuable and threatened habitats.
Funded by Formas, ett forskningsr?d f?r h?llbar utveckling , the project began two years ago with the development process led by UKCEH in collaboration with Swedish organisation IVL Svenska Milj?institutet , under a subcontracting agreement.
To ensure the reliability and accuracy of the SCAIL Sweden tool, measurements were carried out at pig, poultry, and cattle farms over the course of an entire year. These measurements were used to validate the tool and compare its outputs against the ADMS model, a more detailed atmospheric dispersion modeling system. This comparison enhanced the robustness of SCAIL Sweden as a practical and accessible tool for environmental assessments.
The SCAIL Sweden tool incorporates advanced technology to provide a user-friendly platform designed to be accessible to the public. This innovative solution reflects a shared commitment to improving environmental impact assessments and fostering international cooperation in tackling air quality challenges.
