UK Giving Report 2021: the lowdown

Charities Aid Foundation has released its report shedding light on how the pandemic has negatively impacted fundraising and charitable giving in the UK

Released on 23 November, the UK Giving Report highlights how an estimated 1.6 million fewer people gave back to charity in 2020 compared to the previous year. On the flip side, however, the average donation size is higher, increasing the total giving amount from ￡10.6 billion in 2019 to ￡11.3 billion in 2020.

Neil Heslop, chief executive of the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) said: “Although those who give are giving more, we know that for charities to survive and be there for those they help, they rely on mass giving.” So, while a higher total is great, it’s still a concerning time for UK charities.?

Another thing to note is that cash donations seem to be becoming a thing of the past, with charities and non-profits having to adapt to online giving and virtual fundraising events. Going digital has been a lifeline for many. But is it enough?

CAF states that early data for 2021 suggests that even when the world started opening-up, donation levels continued to drop. November, being one of the most generous months for giving, had fallen from 40% in 2019 to 30% in 2020.

Heslop goes on to say that “while we rightly celebrate a rise in the total amount given to charity over the course of 2020, there has been a worrying trend over the last five years that the number of people donating continues to decline”

We can only hope that, as we continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, time will bring more confidence and financial stability, enabling supporters of charities to start donating once more.?
