UK General Elections: Health Focus

Today's the day, the 2024 UK General Election is upon us.?

Some of you, like me, will have already headed to the polling stations, others, not yet.?

One thing that we call all agree on though, is that each of the major players in this race have a view on health and our public services such as the NHS. This has been a key factor in manifestos and conversations throughout the campaigning schedule, and it is safe to say that the health policies from these major political parties are pivotal in shaping our future.? Below I've examined each party's health focus and priorities:?

Conservative Party: The Conservatives emphasise bolstering the NHS workforce and investing in technology to reduce waiting times. Their manifesto prioritises mental health services and expanding GP access, aiming for a more efficient healthcare system. However, despite repeated promises, the delivery on mental health improvements has been slow and criticised for lacking tangible results. Sajid Javid, former Health Secretary, said, "We will build an NHS fit for the future, leveraging technology and expanding our workforce."

Labour Party: Labour's focus is on increasing NHS funding and scrapping privatisation whilst utilising the private sector to cut NHS backlog. They propose to hire more nurses and doctors and prioritise mental health with ring-fenced budgets. Their vision is a publicly funded, publicly provided NHS accessible to all. Critics argue that that while their intentions are noble, the feasibility of their promises, such as the scale of funding required, remains a concern. Labour leader, Keir Starmer stated, "A publicly funded NHS, free at the point of use, is the cornerstone of our healthcare vision."

Liberal Democrats: The Lib Dems advocate for a penny on income tax to directly fund the NHS and social care. They emphasise mental health parity, reducing waiting times, and integrating health and social care services for better patient outcomes. While their approach is pragmatic, some question whether a single penny increase will be sufficient to address the systemic issues within the NHS. Ed Davey, leader of the Lib Dems, noted, "A healthier nation starts with investing directly into our NHS and social care systems."

Reform UK: Reform UK calls for a radical overhaul of the NHS, proposing a mix of public and private healthcare provision. Their policies include reducing bureaucracy, enhancing patient choice, and adopting innovative healthcare solutions. While this approach aims to introduce efficiency, it risks deepening inequalities and could lead to a two-tier healthcare system. Richard Tice, leader of Reform UK, stated, "We need a healthcare system that embraces innovation and offers real choices to patients."

Green Party: The Greens highlight the importance of preventive care and public health. They advocate for increased NHS funding through higher taxes on the wealthiest, a focus on mental health, and sustainable healthcare practices to address long-term health determinants. While their policies are visionary, the challenge lies in implementation and gaining public support for higher taxes. Caroline Lucas, former Green Party leader, said, "A sustainable, preventive approach to healthcare is essential for long-term wellbeing." Each party presents a unique approach, reflecting their broader philosophies and priorities. As voters, understanding these nuances is crucial for making informed decisions about the future of our healthcare system.

Our POV? A fundamental change is needed in how the UK approaches healthcare. Quick fixes and broken promises have hindered progress for too long. A collaborative, well-funded, and innovative strategy is essential to addressing the NHS's deep-rooted issues. Sustainable and equitable solutions prioritising both mental and physical health must be paired with strong accountability and transparency. Without these, inefficiency and inequality will persist.?

Separate to party politics, it will be critical that any future government focuses on the life sciences sector as a key sector that can supercharge economic growth in the United Kingdom for generations to come.?

Turning our eye across the channel, following on from the political shift we have seen in Brussels, a new Hungarian presidency and industry concerns around the exclusivity afforded by the terms of the EU pharmaceutical package - the we could see the EU potentially become a less competitive environment for industry in the coming years. And, whilst VPAG continues to rumble on, there could be an opportunity for the UK to attract industry to its shores by committing to building a thriving ecosystem for the life sciences sector to flourish in.?

As public affairs and policy consultants, we know that it will be critical to build relationships the new incoming MPs and MEPs who have an interest in health as well as maintain existing ones. This will stand as a major priority over the coming weeks and months.?
