Since joining Career Legal, I’ve specialised in placing Employment Lawyers into Private Practice nationally. Following the arrival of the new government in the UK, we are expecting to see robust change within the UK employment space. This has been a prominent talking point with both clients and candidates, discussing how they see the changes affecting them and the UK as a whole.
As we know, 2024 is an exciting year for UK workers, with a fresh wave of reforms focused on improving workers' rights and conditions, marking a shift towards a fairer and more balanced workplace. These changes aim to empower workers, boost job security, and enhance overall well-being.
Key changes we expect to see:
Enhanced Worker Protection: Employees will experience stronger safeguards from their first day on the job from September 2024, including further protection against unfair dismissal. This is a significant step towards ensuring fairer treatment for new starters and creating a more secure working environment for all.
Improved Work-Life Balance: A key focus is placed on promoting a healthier work-life balance. The introduction in April of the right to request flexible working arrangements from day one gave employees greater control over their schedules. Additionally, extended parental and carers leave will provide crucial support for families.
Fairer Workplace Practices: The government is committed to creating fairer workplaces for all. This includes ensuring that tips and service charges are distributed fairly among staff, preventing biased practices. Additionally, measures to allow some workers to request more predictable working patterns will contribute to a better work-life balance.
These reforms are driven by a clear vision of a supportive and inclusive workplace. By prioritising worker protections, work-life balance, and fair practices, the government aims to improve the lives of millions of UK workers and contribute to a stronger economy.
It is an exciting time to be an employee in the UK, with the promise of a brighter future on the horizon.
These changes will also have a significant impact on the legal sector. Lawyers will need to stay updated on the new legislation and regulations to provide effective advice to clients. Employment law will become increasingly complex, requiring specialised knowledge and expertise.
Additionally, there will be an increased demand for legal services as employees seek advice on their rights and entitlements. While these changes will undoubtedly present challenges, they also offer opportunities for legal professionals to play a crucial role in shaping the future of work.

Law firms are gearing up for upcoming changes, which will result in an increased workload. This is leading to a surge in recruitment for Employment Lawyers, predominately at circa 3-6 PQE level. However, it has also created opportunities for further expansion at both the junior and senior levels.
