UIC - Strategically build the relationship to achieve Strategic relationship

When it comes to UIC (University Industry Collaboration), Industry gets thrilled to directly venture into Strategic relationship with the University. They see the UIC more of the tick mark to show it to their HQ or to enrich their Brand position.

But my philosophy is different. ?Don’t jump into Building Strategic Relationship; rather Strategically build the Relationship.

UIC cannot yield value unless you systematically plan & mutually manage the engagement initiative. Let me share my experience on how to strategically build the relationship between Industry & University

Tier3 – Deep Insight on Research and Technology know-how

With Tier 3 activities, both University and the respective Industry will have a mutual understanding of their Research direction, and Business direction, and how STI (Science, Technology & Innovation) can bind the Research & Business.

  • Learn on University’s Top Objective from Director till department Level and how Industry can align to support those
  • Actively participate and support Conferences/workshops hosted by University
  • Conduct Insight analysis on Academia’s research achievement as part of Industry’s Technology Insights ranging from Basic research, applied research to translational research
  • Deep understand the research Professor’s Past, current & future research direction through interactions
  • Jointly prepare & publish white paper on Industry Ecosystem trends, Peer university collaboration trends, associated Government policies on identified technology
  • Advisory & Consultancy engagement with Professors & research scholars (e.g Phd, Post doc) and jointly publish papers
  • Sponsorship & Scholarship of matching talent from University talent pool
  • Joint Events like University Day, Industry day to spread the insights across the stakeholders

Tier 2 – Research & Talent Collaboration

With Tier 2 activities, the common addressable pain points are identified and a systematic Research collaboration, Talent Collaboration starts producing value.

  • Research collaboration on Top Challenges that matches professor aspiration and Industry Top challenges
  • Student Multi-Talent initiatives (Recruitment, Post-Doc avenues, Fellowships, Hackathons, Invite to relevant start-up initiatives) ?
  • Professor Multi-Talent initiatives (Conference Chair, Research grants, research awards, Adjunct professor, paper publications, etc)
  • Bring Global Top Conferences & Summit to local country
  • Multidisciplinary Advisory/Consultancy engagement cluster within University?

Tier 1 – Strategic relationship

With Tier 1 activities, the UIC shall build a world-class advanced technology & Innovation lab to produce significant technologies & elevate the collaboration to pitch at Glocal level. ?

  • Joint Innovation Lab & Open Labs on Global strategic direction that includes Research, Talent, Fundamental scientific research, Joint Patents & publications, Global research collaborations, competitive research infrastructure etc.,
  • Incubation on Future technology research through various avenues that include Chair Professorships
  • Expand the Research Cluster from being multidisciplinary within university to multi ecosystem player across industry, university and start-ups.
  • Global engagement & recognition platforms for University & Professors like participation in Global conference, Analyst summit, standards body participation, engagement with Global researchers etc.,
