UH Academic, Lyndsay Duthie, goes Behind the Scenes on the World’s Biggest TV Entertainment Shows
Television production expert and University of Hertfordshire academic, Lyndsay Duthie, is sharing 20 year’s industry experience and inspiring the next generation of programme makers with her new co-authored book, The TV Studio Production Handbook. The textbook is the first of its kind to encompass the entire contemporary television studio production process whilst also incorporating global TV practices and international production brands.
Alongside fellow author Lucy Brown, Lyndsay has interviewed some of the world’s leading TV production experts and executives working on global smash-hit programme formats such as Britain’s Got Talent, The Voice and Big Brother. It also includes scripts from dramas like Coronation Street, the world’s longest running TV soap. So, if you have ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes whilst watching X-Factor on Saturday evening, or wanted to know what happens on the set of Good Morning Britain, then this is the book for you.
Lyndsay, who is the University of Hertfordshire’s Programme Leader for the Film and TV programme and also an Executive Producer with credits at ITV, BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and SKY, says: ‘Everything from casting through to budgeting is explored as we bring to the life the exciting world of television production. Having worked in the industry for 20 years it is fantastic to share my experience with the next generation of programme makers.’
Aimed at media students and those just starting out in the industry the book explains the television production process from beginning to end and covers everything they need to know to create a successful studio television programme. To do this, it brings together case studies and examples from international TV markets and audiences in the USA, Australia and China.
Neil Thompson Good Morning Britain’s Series Editor applauds the book saying " it provides essential navigation around the maze that is television studio production and draws upon some of the world’s biggest entertainment shows. It is accessible, clear, insightful and elegantly composed!"
It is also attracting interest in USA, Shelly Goldstein Hollywood Writer Producer (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) says ‘Everyone in the world has an idea for a sure-fire hit TV show. But even the best ideas mean nothing if you don’t know how to take them from concept to completion. This book, written by two women who have triumphed in the trenches of TV production gives you the tools you need to negotiate today’s rapidly evolving international TV landscape.’
Lyndsay, who began her career at ITV producing hit series, by the age of 23, before founding her own company, Ice Blue Media, added: ‘The way we watch, consume and make modern television is consistently changing, but it is imperative that the next generation of TV pioneers know the fundamentals of television production before they embark on a career in the industry. That is why we have put together this compressive guide to give them a head start.’
The book launched on 28th October at the British Film Institute.
