November 2008. I moved back to India after living in the USA for 7 years.
People always ask me, why did you move back?
Actually, wait let me say that correctly. It was more like, WHY THE HELL DID YOU MOVE BACK?
The fact is that I was making over $90,000.00 a year as a Software Engineer at 25 years old.
So that should put some perspective into the emotions behind the question!
So, why did I move back…
Well, for multiple reasons, it was the very end of 2008 and I was out of a contract, plus the USA was badly hit by the recession.
But to be honest I could have survived that, a lot of my close friends did.
The fact is that my father was going through an extremely tough situation in his business and life.
He needed support in our family business. He was running 3 of them, all in partnerships with friends and family.
The 2 within the family were going through hell because of the recession and some internal challenges.
The 1 with friends was an age-old case of money is better than relationships. That’s where he wanted me to be.

For 1 year my Father kept sharing with me the tough times he is going through, and the gem of a person he is, he always toned it down 10x.
But I could always read between the lines. I could always sense the trouble he is in. And there was nothing that was going to hold me back.
So why did I move back? In one word - Family.?
It would have been easy to stay back in the USA and live my super comfortable life.
But I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself. My Father needed me and that was far more important than a high-paying corporate job.
Would life have been a lot different if I hadn’t moved back? Who knows… that’s for the higher powers to know.
But one thing is for certain, going through those tough times, getting exposed to harsh people and times taught me a lot.
Moving back resulted in me meeting my life partner, my pillar, my strength and literally whatever else you can think of when a person supports you and accepts you for who you are.
Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.
I would love to know your story. How did you enter the world of business?
Was it all you dreamed of or was it a big shock?
