UGC issues warning to EdTech offering online degrees in collaboration with foreign universities
In a recent development, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has cautioned EdTech companies engaging in online degree programs with foreign universities. The commission declared such franchise arrangements impermissible, threatening non-recognition of degrees. Prof. Manish R. Joshi, UGC Secretary, highlighted concerns about students falling into financial traps with unrecognised courses. UGC plans to release a list of non-recognised EdTech courses.
UGC reports over 3 crore registrations on Academic Bank of Credits platform
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has disclosed that an impressive 3.17 crore students have registered on the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) platform. The initiative is crucial for the National Credit Framework's successful implementation, providing students with diverse educational choices. A senior UGC official highlighted the ongoing registration process and emphasized the significance of students depositing credits earned from various courses into the ABC. Additionally, a total of 1693 academic institutions, including autonomous colleges, central universities, and private universities, have enrolled on the ABC platform, further contributing to the initiative's success.

MoE launches PRERANA program to empower students with leadership qualities
Prerana, a week-long residential experiential learning program for students in grades IX to XII, is now open for registration by the Ministry of Education in India. Aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, the program integrates Indian education principles and values, with its curriculum developed by IIT Gandhi Nagar. Activities encompass yoga, mindfulness, and visits to heritage sites. The program aims to offer a meaningful, unique, and inspiring experience to all participants, thereby empowering them with leadership qualities. Aspiring participants can register through a dedicated portal and will undergo a selection process, with only 20 students ultimately chosen to participate in the program.
UGC releases draft guidelines for college recognition
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued draft guidelines titled "UGC (Recognition of Colleges under Clause (f) of Section 2 of the UGC Act) Regulations, 2023," seeking public opinions. The proposed guidelines outline criteria for UGC recognition, requiring colleges to be affiliated with a university, comply with UGC Act provisions, and offer programs leading to degrees or diplomas of at least one academic year. Colleges must submit establishment details, affiliation certificates, and regulatory body approvals, with universities responsible for document verification. The UGC may remove colleges providing incorrect information from the list of recognised institutions.
IIT-Madras, Sony India launch free training programme for skill development
IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has partnered with Sony India Software Centre to provide industry-ready technical education to engineering college students. The program, focusing on AI/ML, Product Security, and Computer Graphics, is free of cost, offering stipends to selected students. IIT-M Pravartak and Sony India will select approximately 30 students for the Finishing School Training Program, commencing its second batch in January 2024. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between graduate skills and industry demands, following the success of the 2023 program that led to placements in top organisations and startups.
