UEL's Professional Mentoring Programme: Empowering Students for Success
As the University of East London commemorates the 17th anniversary of its Professional Mentoring Programme, it is right we reflect on its legacy of empowering over 10,000 students to enhance their careers through one-to-one relationships with industry professionals. This flagship initiative has been instrumental in guiding students towards their professional goals and bridging the gap between academia and the world of work.
Under the newly refreshed Vision 2028 Careers Strategy, UEL reaffirms its commitment through 'Mentoring for All,’ an institutional pledge that will see every student benefit from a Professional Mentor at least once during their academic journey, emphasising inclusivity and equity in career development opportunities.?
Research consistently highlights the multifaceted benefits of mentoring, including heightened retention rates, academic attainment and career progression as well as the power it holds in advancing social mobility.
The current programme benefits from a diverse cohort of mentors encompassing professionals from various backgrounds and industries, reflecting the rich tapestry of UEL's student demographic. From esteemed institutions like the NHS, United Nations, and Deloitte to media giants like The Telegraph and Grazia, mentors bring a wealth of expertise and real-world insights to the table. Additionally, we are fortunate that over a third of our mentors are alumni, providing relatable and aspirational role models for the next generation. Moreover, the programme's global reach is exemplified by mentors hailing from locations as diverse as Malaysia, the USA, India, Nigeria, and Turkey, offering students a comprehensive understanding of the international job market and diverse cultural perspectives.
We’d love for you to be part of this ambitious and history-making initiative. If you are interested in shaping the future workforce, we encourage you to reach out to [email protected] to join this collaborative effort and help shape the future of Mentoring for All.
