The past few weeks have been an exhilarating time for the University of East London (UEL). We’ve celebrated significant achievements that underscore our commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and community engagement.?We are a university with a radical ambition.
Propelled by the positive momentum of the last six years of Vision 2028, UEL has achieved game-changing success in the 2024 National Student Survey and as The Times & Sunday Times University of the Year in the Good University Guide 2025 for Teaching Quality, and the UK’s highest ranked, most improved university in 2025 in the Guardian University Guide.
UEL Crowned University of the Year for Teaching Quality?
We are thrilled to announce that UEL has been named the UK University of the Year for Teaching Quality by The Times and Sunday Times in the annual Good University Guide 2025. UEL is the top-ranked riser for teaching quality, reflective of record-breaking scores in the 2023 and 2024 National Student Surveys. In 2024, the University ranked 1st in London, 1st in England and 3rd in the UK for students’ overall positivity. This recognition is a testament to the dedication and passion of our teaching staff, who consistently strive to provide our students with a best in class learning experience.?
UEL Hosts the British Science Festival?
A highlight of the month was our successful hosting of the British Science Festival. This prestigious event, held for the first time in London in over two decades, transformed our campus into a hub of scientific exploration. From cutting-edge research demonstrations to engaging workshops, the festival showcased the incredible work being done by our faculty and students. Our faculty members presented groundbreaking research on topics such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and healthcare innovation. The British Science Festival is the culmination of?UEL’s Year of Science?which has been phenomenally successful in highlighting the importance of science in every aspect of our lives.??
UEL Soars in the Guardian University Guide?
In addition to our University of the Year 2025 award for teaching quality, we have also propelled upwards significantly in the latest Guardian University Guide league table. UEL has risen an impressive 40 places, solidifying our position as a leading institution in higher education. In addition, UEL was first among London modern universities for Continuation, which measures the progression of first-year students. This achievement reflects our commitment to providing our students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in today's competitive job market.??

UEL welcomes international students
Students at the University of East London had an unforgettable start to their journey during International Orientation Day. Held on Wednesday, 18 September at Sports Dock, the event was packed with talks, workshops and activities designed to help international students settle in and immerse themselves in UEL’s vibrant, diverse community.
ACE courses climb in Guardian university rankings
The School of Architecture, Engineering and Computing (ACE) at the University of East London (UEL) continues its upward trajectory in the prestigious Guardian University Guide , with its courses earning top spots both in London and across the UK.
Programs in Computer Science and Digital Technologies, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design, and Fine Art have all made notable gains, underscoring ACE’s commitment to academic excellence.?
Science festival closes with a Boom!
UEL academics and alumni were out in force for the weekend programme of the British Science Festival extravaganza, where our Stratford Campus hosted interactive workshops, live experiments, and cutting-edge research talks.
Top of the bill was UEL alumni and TikTok science sensation, Big Manny, who wowed crowds at Old Town Hall Stratford.
Ensuring housing quality for young people
Dr Darren Sharpe, Associate Professor for the Institute of Connected Communities (ICC) at the University of East London (UEL), and Alan Chandler, Co-Director of theSustainability Research Institute (SRI), have collaborated with young people, the police, St Christophers Hospice, and the Dudley Council to ensure housing quality standards in supported accommodation for young people.?
UEL rises 40 places in The Guardian University Guide 2025
Propelled by the positive momentum of the last six years of its transformative Vision 2028 strategy, the University of East London has risen 40 places to 56th in this year’s Guardian University Guide league table rankings, the highest ranked, most improved mover in the UK, with a top 10 (9th) ranking in London.?
The University ranked in the top 30 nationally in three metrics: Satisfied with Assessment, Satisfied with Teaching and Value Added.
Sustainable building material shortlisted for THE Award
Sugarcrete?, a low-carbon alternative to bricks and concrete developed by the University’s Sustainability Research Institute and School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, may be a solution to addressing climate change.
The University of East London has been shortlisted for Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year by the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards 2024.?
Tevin Tobun honoured for business and philanthropy
The University of East London (UEL) has conferred an honorary doctorate on Tevin Tobun, a distinguished entrepreneur and philanthropist.
He received the accolade as hundreds of graduates from the Royal Docks School of Business of Law received their degrees at a ceremony that took place on 3 September on the Docklands campus.
Dean welcomes changes to Ofsted ratings
The Dean of the School of Education and Communities has broadly welcomed the decision to scrap single-word ratings for schools in England.
The government has announced the assessments will be replaced by report cards focussed on improving standards and helping parents to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a school.
