Anil Agarwal, a global business person was born in Bihar, joined father's business of manufacturing aluminium conductors after high school, rather than going to university for higher studies. At 19, he moved to Mumbai to explore career opportunities, started procuring scrap metal from cable companies in adjoining states of Maharashtra and sold it in Mumbai in the mid-1970s.?
In 1976, acquired Shamsher Sterling Corporation, a manufacturer of enamelled?copper, among other products, with a?bank loan. For the next 10 years, he ran both businesses. Set-up a new factory to manufacture jelly-filled cables, Sterlite Industries in 1986, when he realized that?profitability of business was volatile that fluctuated with the prices of raw materials:?copper?and?aluminium. He decided to control input costs through backward integration with manufacturing the metals.
Sterlite Industries was the first private sector Indian company in 1993 to set up a copper smelter and refinery.?It acquired Madras Aluminium in 1995, a 'sick' company that had been shut for 4 years.?Going a step further in backward integration, his focus shifted to acquisition of mines.
When government of India announced disinvestment of public sector undertakings (PSU) in 2001, he acquired 51 percent in?Bharat Aluminium Company?(BALCO) for an amount of INR 551.50 crore. This followed acquisition of majority stake in state-run Hindustan Zinc Limited (HZL). Both were considered sleepy and inefficient mining firms.
Vedanta Resources Plc was incorporated in 2003 in?London to get access to international capital markets. It was the first Indian firm to be listed on?London Stock Exchange on 10 December 2003. It later became the parent company of the group through internal restructuring of group companies and their shareholding.
In 2004 Vedanta Resources Plc announced a?global bond?offering?and acquired Konkola Copper Mines in Zambia.?In 2007, acquired controlling stake in Sesa Goa Ltd, one India's largest producer-exporter of iron ore,?and in 2010, the company acquired Anglo American's portfolio of zinc assets in Namibia, Ireland and South Africa.
This followed acquisition Cairn India, the largest private sector oil-producing firm in India.?Headquartered in?London, Vedanta Resources is a globally diversified natural resources conglomerate, with interests in zinc, lead, silver, copper, iron ore, aluminium, power generation, and oil and gas.?The larger share of its assets, are in India, though Agarwal lives in London. According to The?Sunday Times Rich List?in 2020, his net worth was estimated at £8.5?billion.
According to?Forbes,?Vedanta and Foxconn have jointly decided to invest about $20 billion in 2022, to build semiconductor and display devices plants in Gujarat, with Vedanta having 60% stake in the venture.
Vedanta?has invested ?80,000 crore in?Odisha, with an additional investment of over ?25,000 crore to invested for expansion of Aluminium, Ferrochrome and mining business. Vedanta is contributing nearly 4% of Odisha's GDP.
2. Career Tips
Massive job cuts in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), very popular technologies is matter of concern for the job seekers. Further cut by Google, Microsoft, Meta etc. has added fuel to the fire. It’s a warning to the admission seekers to engineering institutions, where everyone wants to rush for CSE.
Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), no doubt, has maximum demand in the job market, primarily due to hefty packages in Crores of Rupees. But the numbers getting that honour could be counted on fingers. Next, irrespective of the branch, each segment of industry needs application of IT/CSE tools.

Why IIT ?????Despite increase in number of IITs to 23, these can accommodate about 10K students.
A social site QUORA has interesting discussion going on, where the participants compare various IITs, NITs, BITS and branches of engineering. But none talks about older institutions like Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology (TIET) etc. and some of the newer ones that have created a niche position in technical education.
Institutions do make a difference, but remember its one’s own effort?also that has considerable weightage in career success. Hence, if one desires to be Engineer, be an engineer without getting tagged to a branch or institution.
Each profession has scope and career opportunities that one should learn to EXPLORE, preferably from early second year. Training and internship planning, out of syllabus learning, appreciation of trends in economy and technology and learning history of entrepreneurs is to be appreciated, as suggested by a book on career guidance i-Career [1] published by Notion Press, Chennai.
This book will be available during the World Book Fair at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from Feb’ 25 to Mar’ 5, 2023, between 11 AM to 8 PM.

India is one of the leading nation in establishing Startups and those attracting investment of one billion or more US$ are termed Unicorn. A business that combines Social Service objective is called social entrepreneurship. Many health and education projects established to serve society come under this classification and all enterprises that Recycle Waste to generate Wealth fall in this category, because these promote Cleanliness.

2 年The amazing story of the Vedanta Group reflects the power of backword integration. There are a few more such success stories like Reliance Industry. This can be applied by start-up businesses including the adoption of a shared infrastructure model to economise the initial investment.
