UCB’s contribution to Belgium's thriving innovation hub
Innovating and turning science into new medicines will never be easy. It requires a culture that nurtures and fosters innovation, skilled people who want to make a difference and access to state-of-the-art technology.
At UCB we work hard at getting this balance just right and recognise that there is always room for improvement and that breakthroughs can often come through collaborations and partnerships. So, it’s great to be able to announce today that UCB is part of an innovation partnership specific to the field of advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP). ATMPs are medicines that are based on genes, tissues, or cells. They offer ground-breaking new opportunities for the treatment of disease and represent one of the most innovative and promising revolutions in modern medicine.
The Walloon Government backed project, led by BioWin (the health competitiveness cluster of Wallonia), involves 26 partners and aims to establish new collaborations between academic institutions, research centers and companies, strengthening the advanced therapy medicinal products sector in Wallonia. As part of the innovation partnership UCB and Thermo Fisher Scientific will focus on a workplan looking at the development of analytical technologies in gene therapy research. Our ambition will be to discover novel analytical technologies that further our understanding and address the associated challenges of translating recombinant adeno-associated viral vectors (rAAVs) based gene therapy research into new medicines.

For many years Belgium has been recognized and remains a great place to innovate. It’s one of the reasons why UCB has continued its investment in our high-tech Braine Campus (one of three key strategic research centres for UCB), in the establishment of our Leuven research satellite, as well as an R&D presence in our global headquarters in Anderlecht. Each of our Belgian sites are home to a thriving and dynamic community of scientists, technicians, engineers, and manufacturing personnel who will enable us to be faster, flexible, smarter and more scalable - making our company in Belgium one of the most exciting places for creative minds and people determined to innovate, push the boundaries of what’s possible and shape the future.
